Reference your pressure gauge as the 12:00 position. Going clockwise- 12:00 is Filter, normal running position 2:00 is Waste, water goes from pool and exits the waste line, bypassing filter. 4:00 is Closed, used only when servicing equipment 6:00 is Backwash, reverses water through the filter and goes out the waste line. 8:00 is Recirculate, water bypasses filter and returns to pool. 10:00 is Rinse, water goes through filter and exits to waste line, used briefly after backwashing to clear sediment from filter. Note that the "pointer," not the handle that you grab, indicates which setting you are on.
If you look closely at the plastic near the threaded ports you will see Pump, Return and Waste. Pump is the hose coming up from the pump discharge, return goes back to the pool or to a heater or other accessory if you have one and waste is the backwash line.
Your system has a suction side and a discharge side. Skimmer and bottom drain hook to the suction side. Returns (discharge) return via chlorinator or other sanitary system and heater if appropriate, to ports in the side of the pool.
Hayward 711A13 Vari flow valve. When I push down the handle to move valve into other settings the handle does not want to relock into the next setting. I have to manually pull up un the back of the handle and tap with my hand to get spring to retract. What can I do to lubricate this sping inside?
Hey! Mine was doing the same thing. I had the hoses switched up. I had the hose from the pump connected to the port marked RETURN (on the Hayward vari pump valve). Not good! I also had the return line hose (from pool) connected to the port marked pump. It happens! The problem is I tried EVERYTHING ELSE before I found my error. This includes a trip to Leslie's to buy a brand new multi port valve (good thing they have a return policy) AND changing out my relatively new sand in the filter AND taking apart the vertical tube and each individual flange at the bottom to clean them out. Please check your hoses FIRST if it won't backwash! By the way...I've been a pool owner for 17 years. I think my experience worked against me since I didn't recheck my work at setup. NOTE: It might SEEM like your filter is working because you get suction at the skimmer and water rushing thru the return line into the pool. It's not working if your lines are backwards like mine were! My water started turning green!
