  1. Locate where your CD or DVD ROM drive connects to the motherboard and make a note of this. Make sure you know exactly how the gray cable was connected.
  2. Have the new DVD ROM drive handy and unplug and/or slide out (depending on setup) the old one. Unplug the cables from the appropriate places. You do not have to unplug the one going to the DVD ROM. Wiggle back and forth gently and then pull out.
  3. Attach your new cables and reattach to motherboard and power supply where you removed the old ones.
  4. Reattach the power cord and cables, but do not close up the computer entirely yet.
  5. Test your new DVD player by placing a disc in the drive and ensuring the green light comes on and you hear it power on. If this happens without a problem, then close up the case. If not, then check to make sure cables are securely fastened in the correct motherboard slots and to the power supply

Will not recognize disk inserted

Try changing your DVD regional locale. Some dvd/roms will restrict certain media if the locale is set to some other region than your own. The other thing you can do is update the drivers - - this seems arbitrary and you probably hear that often when asking a techie guru... But it is well justified. Also try different brands of dvdrws. Some dvd roms will restrict +rw - rw. Hope this helps.

CHANGE the REGION on my SONY DVD BDP-S185

From the users manual:

Region code (BD-ROM/DVD VIDEO only)
Your player has a region code printed on the
rear of the unit and will only play BD-ROMs/
DVD VIDEOs labeled with identical region
codes.

Nothing was said in the manual about changing the region code.

My DVD Rom of Toshiba Satelite 1800 laptop needed to be changed because the DVD tray cable was torn. When I replaced the new DVD ROM the laptop is not detecting it and it even takes a long time to boot....

I think dear speed of proccessor and the speed of you DVD ROM is deferent that is, you proccessor is faster than your cd rom or vice-versa is also possible, I would rather suggest you to know the speed your old DVD ROM and get another of same speed like old one, or just try changing cable of your old DVD rom and use it.
