Recently the fan on my Gateway 3250s has been running fast and loud all the time. It use to do it just when the computer was bogged down and I would restart and then it would function normally, but now it does it all the time. It speeds up as the computer starts and is at full speed by the time the computer is fully booted. Do I just need a new fan or is a symtom of something worse?

It could be the sensor and not the fan. If the sensor has been dislodged, you may have to reseat the processor.

In bios, you should be able to read the temperature. If it is below 50 degrees or so, you should not have a big problem. It would either be the fan or the sensor.

Was it the CPU or the system fan?

More than likely your computer needs a good dusting:

  1. Unplug the computer
  2. Take it outside
  3. Open up the case
  4. Spray all the dust out.
  5. Plug everything back.
That should take care of your problems. Let me know if it doesn't.

My emachine has always had issues being slow sometimes freezing up and not shutting down...n e way I had it less than two years n its been my first computer in years so I did virus scans and all...ok today...

Loud fan noise and heat are symptoms of a dusty machine. Use canned air or a blower and dust it out. You'll want to have the machine open for this.

Cpu overheats

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

Gateway GT4010 boots then starts beeping and shuts off

First check your power supply section and check your power fan that is running properly. if ok then the suspected area is your processor section. please check it if its collar fan nor running properly then clean up or change that. and the other advice is please check your processor pin which are too tiny. be careful about these.

My computer won,t turn on

2x2 or 2x4 Power Connector Not Plugged In
If the power supply cable with the 2x2 connector or 2x4 connector (depending on your desktop board), is not plugged into the 12V processor core voltage connector located near the processor socket, the system will not boot up. You will see lights onboard and on the chassis front panel and the processor fan will spin, but nothing will appear on the monitor. See figures below for cable placement.
  • Make sure the fans on the processor are connected properly and running.
  • Make sure that the thermal interface material or the thermal grease is applied to the processor properly.
  • Make sure that the power supply fan is running properly and any other external case fans are running properly.
  • Make sure that the air intakes for the external fans are unobstructed and have at least several inches away from walls and other items.
