My tv screen when on turns yellow then after a while it will switch back to normal colors what can be wrong with it....

Televisions covered: all Projection with yellow picture, but not Projection TVs with a yellowish tint surrounding objects in a nearly normal picture.

Yellow = red + green
normal picture = red + blue + green (RGB). See illustration.

Fig. 1 Additive color mixing in an RGB monitor, or RGB Projection TV.

The circuitry powering your blue output, or the blue light engine itself is starting to fail.

Operating Theory:

The lamp module shines a bright light into the optical unit; there are a series of lens and baffles, and at the top of the light engine, a lens puts the picture into a mirror which is reflected onto the screen; All video and color is processed thru the light engine. Blue most commonly fails first, leaving a yellow picture.

Re: Toshiba 65 in Cinema Series - 12 years old. Color Separation. Green bow at top center of screen, red and blue double images tilting upwards toward sides. Sometimes clears unassisted after set has...

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Warpped TV picture

There are two problems here but may be caused by one component

The flyback transformer or transistor equivalent is faulty The colors are warped convergence controls which may be due to a faulty sustain board or part of the first problem. DIY is not an option and repair estimate is about $3-400.00

This set needs a major repair. there are bad connections on the power board and a fuse is blown. You pretty much need a technician to fix this.

Mitsubishi VS-50609

Hello billy218,

What is happening is that your convergence amplifier modules are beginning to go bad. These amplifiers are what amplify the signals used for convergence (how the RGB lights line up on each other) when they go bad the RGB lights tend to bow towards the center of the TV and the colors begin to mis-align. There are many sites devoted to doing the changing of the amplifiers yourself, however although these sites are accurate in give the instructions on how to change the amplifiers they do very little for actual troubleshooting and finding the underlying cause of the problem. In most cases its just that the amp modules have gone bad, but sometimes there is an overheating problem that triggers the damage. I would suggest having a TV repair person come to your place to check the problem and to fix it. The repair should cost about $250.00

RGB picture guns ( CRT's ) are ok. Your set needs a common
convergence circuit overhaul requiring replacement of two IC's,
part # STK392-570. Usual cost about 400.00.........T.

Warped Picture, Separated colors

Each color (red, green & blue) has an amplifier IC (STK-).
When there is a convergence issue, the first step is change both
IC's for reliability. Then check for open fuses devices, usually
pico fuses.Then re-check convergence alignment.......T.
