First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
If your harddrive still not recognized then you need to repair your harddrive.Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer then your harddrive has internal issue.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Our MAXTOR Onetouch 4 mini is not recognized by computer. Can your software recover the data?

could be several issues to cause this fault, make sure your usb port is usb 2.0, replace the usb cable, take the unit apart and look for loose conections, try the drive in another caddy, or try another drive in the maxtor caddy. You will probably be able to remove the drive from the caddy and connect it into your computer if you have a tower and the correct connections.

4.) Right Click on the USB device in the Disk Management panel
5.) Click on Change Drive Letter

I have maxtor basic 500G ex works fine when I plug into old laptop with XP, but when I plug in to new laptop with Windows 7 it says I have to format drive..Why is this?

Try opening the device manager and changing device removal policy to "Better Performance" (remember to always safely remove the device afterwards or you'll likely lose data).

Also, verify that the partition type is recognized in Local Computer > Drive Management and the drive letter doesn't conflict with anything else.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB External Drive Does not show up on my computer

I have a Onetouch Mini 4, operating fine on two computers with Windows XP but couldn't get it working on Windows 7. I plugged it in and it would be recognized but a message would come up saying there were errors and to scan. Tried scanning and not scanning and couldn't get the drive to work. If I tried to open it would give me the "access denied". I couldn't get to a security tab from a folder as none of them were working.
It ended up that I wasn't listed as an owner nor had any permissions so I needed to be added to the device.

Here is what I did -

System, device manager, disk drives, right click on onetouch, properties, volumes, populate, the select on touch volume, properties, security, advanced, change permissions, add, typed in my user name - hit checked names (it fixed the format), then hit ok.

Then make sure you set the permissions for all the users.
