Turn the steering wheel hard to left or right and at the same time turn your key.. if the car was turned off with the wheels turned there my be some pressure on the column good luck.
there is a contained loop of wire under the steering wheel called a clock spring. All of the steering wheel controls are wired through the clock spring. These wires can break causing your symptoms.
Not a lot of info here. I am assuming you are saying you can't turn the key in the lock. If the steering wheel is under pressure (can happen even with the wheels straight ahead) the lock mechanism can be putting pressure on the key making it very hard for the ley to release the lock mechanism. Try pulling on the wheel in one direction and turning the key. If nothing, try turning the wheel the other direction and try turning the key. You may need to replace the lock mechanism. This usually involves being able to turn the key in the lock or having to drill the lock. You are probably going to need a locksmith for this one but at least that is cheaper than going to the BMW shop. Of course you are not completely free of BMW because if the locksmith has to punch the lock, you will need to get a replacement.
disconnect the battery so the air bag does not go off, remove screws from under steering wheel,remove nut on shaft and use a puller to remove steering wheel.

Don't listen to that guy!!!! you need to take the plastic cover behind the steering wheel. there are two bolts holding the air bag in t30 (torx) then the air bag falls right off. then the steering wheel is held in by a 15 mm head bolt. Warning: make sure battery is disconnected for at least 30 min before you mess with the air bag connector
