Spa heater will not ignite. Shows "AO" code.

Spa heater installed last winter. Bought it from Leslie's and let their installer put it in. Most times it acts like it is going to ignite, then it shows a code "AO" and shuts down. I beleive it has something to do with the blower switch.

Any ideas?

AO usually has to do with the blower vacuum switch. Several items can cause an AO fault code. First thing to check would be is the blower on? If it isn't, then you would need to check to see if the blower is getting the proper voltage. Proper voltage depends on the exact model of heater. If the blower is on, then you will need to check the blower vacuum switch. You will also need to check the tubing connecting the blower vacuum switch to the blower. Any breaks or a disconnected tube can cause this error. Also, it could just be that the vacuum switch is faulty.

You need to check and see if you have enough gas supply to run the heater. Older heaters would run on a small gas supply but forced draft are hinkey about how much gas they get. Sometimes this is a gas line size problem but more often than not it will be a gas meter problem. On the face plate of your meter their is a number that tells the size. With a 250 and other appliences in the house you will want a 350 or bigger. The good news is the gas company will upsize this for nothing. If they are supplying more gas your buying more gas. It could be other things but this is the first thing to look into.

You didn't indicate exatctly which model you have. But on most the AO error code is :Blower vacuum switch
open error If the blower prover switch does not close after the blower starts the control will
stop the ignition trial go into lockout. The blower will continue to run. Automatic reset is immediate after the switch closes.Check to be sure combustion blower starts

Expected life time of Sta-Rite heater?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Overall heater life is often dictated more by the pool maintenance history and chemical usage than location. Generally speaking up here in the Midwest you can expect 12 - 15 years of service life from a heater. More if it gets pampered with such treatment as proper winter covering and regular cleaning and maintenance. Far less if chemical issues arise in a pool and are not dealt with properly. A heater can fail in a matter of weeks if water conditions are that poor.

So, to answer your question; with proper installation, maintenance and water treatment I’d put it at 15 – 18 years before the heater will have spent itself from wear.

If this answer does not fix your problem or you are not sure about part or all of this post, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Blower runs but no ignition then AO error code

Your problem then would be the pick up tubing and/or switch attached to the blower that closes once the blower is on to allow the heater to ignite. Pull the tubing and check it for dust or other debris clogging it and check inside the blower housing for the same. If you can test the switch under operation, you should see it remains open during start up which is why the burners won’t fire. If you do not find any obstruction (if you can, blow some compressed air thru too just to be sure) then you will need to replace the switch.

AO error

This error is produced when the blower prover switch does not close after the blower starts, the control will stop the ignition and go into lockout. Automatic reset is immediate after the blower prover switch closes.

If you keep having this problem, contact a reputable service company, especially if it's under warranty.

The link to the owners manual is below, it references fault codes, etc..

Hope this helps.
