Kenmore Model # 2539284214 Serial# WB05106301 Found freezer thawing out Compressor was hot and cycling on the Compressor O/L in cycle about 7 times and then started to run Temp inside went to 4.8 Degrees then shut off and came back on at 15.8 degrees It ran like this from 9:30 PM until 5:30 the next day. when i checked it at 5:30 PM it was in the defrost cycle which is suppose to happen after 12 hr.of compressor run time. when it completed the defrost cycle it would start it was cycling on the compressor O/L for about 10 times then it finally started. the amperage on start up was 15.5 then it went to run at 4.5 amps for about 5sec. then tripped out. The cycle time when it was running off the t-stat was approx.30 -40 min. The t-stat is set on #1 and the blower is running Compressor was to hot to touch. My question is the compressor going bad or could it be the door gasket and it is running to long over heating the compressor once it stays running the amperage is 1.5 amps Could it be low on refrigant all the coils are inside. shows no signs of icing up

When its running how hot are the sides the starting amps are too high and 1.5 running amps ain't bad now the the cut in cut out are too high if you look on the dial that the mid point settings that's where you should have it not on 1 1 is hot set it on the straight line that's where you should do all your testing colder settings go up not down you could be overheating the compressor by making it come on too quick the freezer should be about -10 or so do you see any gaps in the gasket

Kenmore upright freezer does not shut off until door is opened. freezer seems to work well.

Going by the service manual it seems that everything is fine. The fan is supposed to run while the door is shut and the compressor is supposed to run 12 hours and then a 30 min defrost cycle comes on then the cycle starts over again. I am posting the service manual, parts and wiring diagram for you to view if you so choose. https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/8a6d6ca4-04b6-4cfa-b435-3980042b3ad3

We have a Kenmore 16, model model 253.8283680, that recently continuously cycles on and off. What could be the problem associated with this?

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The normal cycle is: Your compressor will turn on to raise the freezer temperature 20 degrees F. above the set temperature, and then the compressor will shut off, Until the freezer temperature drops 20 degrees F. below the set temperature and again the compressor will turn on.

One of the main problems with this type of freezer is the door gasket becomes crushed over time or the door is so thin it becomes deformed.

Do not try to replace the door gasket. You have to soak the new gasket in hot water for 1/2 hour and then form it on the door.

If you notice a gap in the corner of the door - pull hard on it to get it flush.

Recondition the door gasket - With a hair dryer and a kitchen spatula, heat the gasket and try to expand the gasket by pulling out with the spatula.

You can purchase a special freezer lubricant. Be sure not to over do it. It can make the door hard to open. P/N 542638

Freezer in unheated/unairconditioned garage it stays cold in winter time but it is not freezing when the temperature is hot in the garage

The first thing is to find out if there is a fan that runs next to the compressor. If not then in the summer the machine is overheating and passing the heat up to the machine itself thawing or preventing the freezer from operation properly

Appears to run fine. but everything thawed. black canister at bottom (with coper wires from it) is hot to the touch. approx 3 years old

Compressor is supposed to be hot... your problem may be that the unit is stuck on defrost cycle... The defrost timer should be behind the kick panel and have a dial type adjustment on it.... find it and try to turn it just a touch. It may come on but you will need to replace it if it does

Food in freezer is thawing, compressor very hot to the touch

It sounds like the motor to the circulating fan is wearing out . This fan is hard to diagnose as it will spin the blade , but as you said it will not spin fast enough to circulate air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The motor is DC non brush type. It will cost a minimum of $300.00 to repair/replace this fan assembly, but it is worth that compared to replacing the refrigerator

1991 Kenmore 16 model 253 in storage for 7 years. Plugged it in and turned it nn last night and seemd to run fine, nice and quiet just like before. Today it is not cold and the comressor seems to be r

If the freezer was stored and not running for 7 years it may have lost coolant.  Since the compressor is running recharging the coolant may fix the problem.  Hot compressor might indicate low coolant since its motor is immersed in it.
