Question about Sony Grand WEGA KF42WE610 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

KF42WE610 bad lamp... and ballast?

My uncle had a coworker who had issues with their tv and asked if I could take a look at it. I noticed that when I turn the tv on the ballast has a component that has a pinkish glow for a few seconds and then stops. Originally I thought the ballast was bad, but I checked the lamp and the lamp does need to be replaced. What I don't want to do is replace the lamp and have the ballast blow that right away. Is there any way to check if the ballast is still good? Would I be encouraged to replace both the lamp and ballast in case this is somewhat of a common problem? Let me know please, Thanks

Yeah it was the lamp. That was so simple. I figured the owner had already checked the lamp prior to bringing it to me and I had never seen the pink glow that the ballast was showing.

Thanks again welcomejee. Your help is always appreciated.

Hi,
DLP Lamp has electrodes inside and ballast generates high voltage that makes spark on these electrodes thus got high bright light. New lamp wont die due to bad ballast so replace lamp and see tv works or not.
This tv has self diagnostic feature, turn On tv and let it shut down, now check standby light that would be blinking in specific order, for example 3 or 4 times blink then pause for 3 seconds and again blinks.
Let me know how many times standby light blinking in this tv to help you with more info.
Thanks.

5 is a lamp driver fault, could be a poorly seated bulb or a bad ballast. Usaly it is a bad ballast. Previous bulb failure could have dammaged the balast.

Hi iverson_101

This could be a lamp issue. The easiest way to be sure is to take out th lamp and check for any irregularities on it e.g. white or black vein like looking marks , a buuble at the end of the shaft or a broken fillament.

If cannot spot anything this could rather be a Ballast ( lamp's powersupply ) that has gone faulty and will have be replaced.

Thanks for using Fixya and good luck !

Tv turns itself off after a few moments of clear viewing

HLP, HCN HL-S The Start-up Problem or/and
3 LEDs in the front blinking.

Unplug the set, pull out the lamp module (not all the way - leave it on the track) and push it back in.

Power issues (Tv not turning on) were typically due to faulty ballast. While the TV reports a bad lamp it is the ballast itself causing the issue. Samsung is well aware and will replace both the ballast and the lamp (since the lamp can be prematurely aged but the bad ballast). After replacment most people stop having issues

good luck
