My login didn't get accepted with the above solution.
I want to edit that this solution works for my older 2.4GHz base units (models DCT-748 and DCT-7488) - both are about 3 yrs old.
While your incoming message is playing, enter 0 (zero) and your two digit security code.
If you didn't create one, and I recall correctly, the factory default was 80.
The machine should give you the date & time along with the number of messages. It will give voice prompts for the codes, but the robotic synthesized voice can be hard to understand. The playback code is 0 (zero) 2, the message delete code is 0 4.
Now if your brain escapes you as you dash out the door when you leave and you find that you forgot to turn the answering on, as mine has done, let the phone keep ringing (about 10-12 times). You'll hear a bunch of electronic noise, at which time you enter 0 and your security code. Your machine should read out the date and time, then you can enter 0 6 and the voice should report "answer set" or "answer on".
