Hello, I am using my Zoom H4 as an Audio I/O input to my computer and running Cubase LE. When I've been recording for about an hour and a half, I begin to have all recordings become distorted. The distortion goes in and out, but it ruins my tracks. I've shut everything down for about half an hour, and started back up, which solved the problem. Is there anything I can do to get it to record regularly for longer than an hour or so?
Hi there. Yes I have a very similar problem, namely, I get distortion or perhaps more accurately - I get "static"- sort of white noise like you are between old style tv channels with the sound up. The infuriating part is that it's an intermittent problem so it's tricky to replicate it on demand. Needless to say my musical tracks are stuffed. This has occurred in garageband and audacity. I can't get the bundled cubase LE to even recognize the H4 as an audio input. I'm using a newish Imac 2.4ghz computer. Thankyou in anticipation.Hi there. Re: Distortion with Zoom H4 as Audio I/O to computer
Try using the power pack instead of batteries. Be sure to remove the batteries before using power pack, you can wreck the machine if you do not remove batteries. NEVER use the H4 on power pack while there is batteries inside.
When using the H4 as an audio interface power is provided via the usb. I've had similar issues. When using the H4 as an audio interface power is provided via the usb.

There could be a few potential causes for the issue you're experiencing with your H4 recorder and Cubase LE 4. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the problem:
Check the device driver: Make sure that the ZOOM H4 ASIO driver is properly installed on your computer. You may need to reinstall the driver if it has become corrupted or is not up to date.
Make sure the device is connected: Ensure that the H4 recorder is properly connected to your computer and that the connection is secure.
Restart the computer: Sometimes, simply restarting the computer can resolve issues with drivers or software.
Check the Cubase LE 4 settings: Make sure that the H4 recorder is selected as the input and output device in Cubase LE 4's preferences.
Check for updates: Check for updates for both Cubase LE 4 and the H4 recorder to ensure that you are using the latest version.
Disable other audio devices: If you have other audio devices connected to your computer, try disabling them to see if that resolves the problem.
Run Cubase LE 4 as administrator: Try running Cubase LE 4 as an administrator, by right-clicking on the Cubase icon and selecting "Run as administrator"
Check for conflicts: Make sure that there are no other software running that may be conflicting with the H4 recorder and Cubase LE 4, such as other audio recording software or system services that may be using the audio driver.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be best to contact the manufacturer of the H4 recorder or Cubase LE 4 for further assistance. They may be able to provide additional troubleshooting steps or offer a solution to the problem.
Make sure phantom power is enabled on the Tascam audio interface and you must enable the input in cubase that corresponds with the interface input on the track you are trying to record to.
Convert the audio to Mono WAV (16Bit, 44.1KHz). This can be done by using Cubase(Hope you got Cubase LE with Zoom). In an empty project import the audio, then mark the whole track using the Draw tool and then got to File->Export. Here select the above options and export. Import this file into Zoom H4 either by copying directly into the memory card or through connecting the Zoom to computer ( I copy it directly into the memory card's STEREO folder). Now if you import it to any project, it will appear there. You can now use Zoom H4 as a Karaoke device!! Anyway, sad that Zoom H4 doesn't support stereo tracks in the 4Track mode.
If you are using a Mac and have Leopard (sys 10.5)
You need to upgrade firmware on the H4 from Zoom website
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/software/h4.php
You will need an external SD card reader.
Good Luck
I may possibly have solved this. I didn't realise that when I log off from Cubase, the ASIO driver returns to the Multimedia ASIO driver, which seems to be the default setting.
Every time I want to record with the Zoom H4 in future I'll need to reconfigure the ASIO driver to the H4 one.
I thought once I'd set the driver, it would remain there every time Cubase booted up. Apparently not.
Hi Ken,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble uploading the recordings from your Zoom H4 to the Cubase LE software. Have you tried connecting the Zoom H4 to your computer via USB and then importing the recordings directly into the Cubase LE program? You may also want to make sure that you have the latest version of the software installed on your computer, as well as the latest drivers for the Zoom H4. If you are still having difficulty, please don't hesitate to contact the Zoom or Cubase support teams for further assistance. I hope this helps!
K, 1st of all... Try listening to the files directly from the h4, before download to the nbook. No dist? Problem solved.
Otherwise, note the mics are really sensitive, even in low gain, any "wind" instrument, like your flute, my clarinet, or even the voice can generate distortion.
solutions:
1. You have a "monitor" mode in the h4, just check for it, easy to find. Then you can adjust details on the h4, as you play and listen the output.
2.check the distance you are playing from the mic, be generous with that, anyhow you can move higher the gain. :)
3. Don't play directly to the mic, as the air from your instrument may generate a noise that is not a note, but simply air coming through the mic.
Monitor through computer... I'm stucked trying to make it work with any recording program in Vista, don't know how to make the system rcognize the device. So, I can't help you, and by the way, do you know how to record in Windows??
Make the instalation of cubase LE that come when you buying the Zoom H4.When you instaled this, the driver H4 must appear in the sound/device properties.I hope you can solve FF
