I put in an older game into console (Civilization Revolution)that hadn't been played in awhile. I just recently signed up for Xbox Live and this game had not been loaded since then. A window came up and said there was an update for this of the game. I played the game with no obvious update to the game. Five mintutes later the whole system completely crashed! The game froze and had a checkerboard fuzzy screen. I can only play games I downloaded onto harddrive (eg. Ms.Pacman)previously. If I insert any disc into console the whole system crashes again and can only be stopped by turning off console.

You will need to accept the update otherwise you will not be able to sign into Xbox Live.

There was a recent dashboard update, this could be the problem.

you NAT type is most likely not open.
Without and open NAT, you xbox live connection will not be as efficient.

The game was released broken. There is an update on xbox live that fixes it. So you pay twice, once for the game and once for xbox live. If you don't have xbox live or no internet you simply can't play. In other words you got robbed. Nice scam huh?

Delete update data.

Are you using the same console that you were using when you purchased the Rockband 1 songs? Can you play the songs if you sign into xbox live? If you are on another machine or have ever sent your console in for repairs, and you can play the tracks when signed into xbox live then you need to transfer the DRM(Digital Rights Media) to your new console.You will need your new/repaired machine signed into xbox live and a computer that is online. I am wired from my modem to my Xbox and it signs me in but everytime I put in a game as soon as it gets to the menu, it says "Disconnected from Xbox Live". I press my Xbox button and go to the dashboard and it signs me back in again. Why is this happening?

Call Xbox Live and make sure your account is still active. The card on the account to renew your membership could have expired!

Make sure that you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription first,
Second You won't both be able to play at the same time enless it is a game that provides guest support(and in some games WITH) guest support you cannot play anything ranked online. To sign in a game with Guest support hit the guide button on the second controller select choose profile and scroll down, if u see "Guest" as a profile and you did not create it, then that game has guest support, and you can both play.
