Toshiba says:
Information for Owners of Toshiba SD-3980 and SD-K750 DVD Players
To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the
integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer
Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update. This is not a
safety issue.
Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously
improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention
that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750
may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component
part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on
the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the
model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the
unit.
If you own either of these models and experience the issue described
above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for
information on how to obtain a replacement unit.
Hey, just read a Toshiba announcement about this subject and it is a piece problem so you shoul contact the 1-800 number for a possible replacement of the unit. good luck

Calls every disc a bad disk
The same thing has just happened to ours.
mine does the same thing. i haven't been able to figure it out yet. help!
Every disc I load tells me it is a bad disc....I purchased a "cleaning" disc but it will not even allow that disc to work....help.
My player is doing the same think + the drawer often won't open either. what's the 1-800 Toshiba number? I likely won't be buying another Toshiba.
Every DVD comes up as a "bad disc" on my Toshiba DVD - what can I do to fix it?
Does it work to unplug the unit for 3 minutes (like the call center suggests)? Will the people at Toshiba follow through with repairing this "bad disc" message, which everyone has to face as an owner of the SD-3980 DVD player? Anyone had success yet? TOSIBA'S CONTACT INFORMATION: Hours of operation, repair/product dept., are; Mon - Fri > 8AM - 7PM (CST) Email: [email protected]
Defective junk acknowledged by the manufacturer. Toshiba will replace it IF AND ONLY IF the model number ends in SU2. If yours ends in only SU, like mine, no replacement is available. Instead, you can pay to have Toshiba service a defective product. No thanks. Instead, I will choose to never buy Toshiba again and tell everyone willing to listen that Toshiba will manufacture a defective product and not stand by it.
