Every DVD comes up as a "bad disc" on my Toshiba DVD - what can I do to fix it?

  • Anonymous Jan 25, 2009

Does it work to unplug the unit for 3 minutes (like the call center suggests)? Will the people at Toshiba follow through with repairing this "bad disc" message, which everyone has to face as an owner of the SD-3980 DVD player? Anyone had success yet? TOSIBA'S CONTACT INFORMATION: Hours of operation, repair/product dept., are; Mon - Fri > 8AM - 7PM (CST) Email: [email protected]

Defective junk acknowledged by the manufacturer. Toshiba will replace it IF AND ONLY IF the model number ends in SU2. If yours ends in only SU, like mine, no replacement is available. Instead, you can pay to have Toshiba service a defective product. No thanks. Instead, I will choose to never buy Toshiba again and tell everyone willing to listen that Toshiba will manufacture a defective product and not stand by it.

Toshiba says:
Information for Owners of Toshiba SD-3980 and SD-K750 DVD Players Toshiba DVD SD-3980SU2 or SC2 player loads every - spacer.gif To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update. This is not a safety issue.
Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit.
If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit.

I own a Toshiba SD-3980SU2 DVD Video Player. I keep getting an Incorrect Disc comment, and bad comment. I an using DVD-RW discs. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the player.

You are probably using incorrect disc formats in this DVD player; try DVD+RW if you must use re-writables, or DVD-R (finalised in a recorder or burned on a PC). I doubt this model supports DVD-RW, so the problem wouldn't be with the player; it would be the formats of the discs you use.

Don't use DVD-RW discs in this player if it does not support that format.

Just wondering whether damp has affected the circuit boards.
Try putting it in a warm room plug it in and leave for 2 hours then try again.

When I put the disc in it starts to load and tehn a messagE " NO VALID DISC"

Maybe the file format is not supported or the disc might be in bad condition. Try using lens cleaning disc.

Toshiba DVD player doesn't retract or load media. DVD carrier is stuck in the out position

There is a rubber band on the motor that opens the tray out to load the disc, somehow that must of slip off the motor. Or the motor itself went bad.

Screen on TV shows Toshiba label and says there is no disc but a disc loaded in it

The laser unit has gone bad. Usually it's not worth replacing as it is about 3/4 the cost of a new player.

Toshiba SD-K850 trouble

I contact Toshiba Service and they suggest to unplugg AC cord then wait for 3 minutes but this is not a real solution ("Bad" message). I already notice other Toshiba models have the same problems (SD-K750 & SD-3980), and they are replaced them because of component part failure. (my DVD is a SD-K850).
They also explain that if that process not work, I must call their
Service Dept. for more details, same phone # (1-800-631-3811).
Luck!

Toshiba SD-3980

If the disk is not dirty, smudged up or scratched -- it is likely the laser pickup getting weak or the spindle motor not keeping at the right speed. If you have to clean the disc, wipe from the center out with a clean soft cloth.
