The IPOD froze up, showed a song was playing, and the count-down was stopped. I turned the IPOD off, and tried to turn it back on, and got the apple icon. I then tried to restore, and it told me to use ITUNES to restore. I tried that, and I got the red x icon. The IPOD does not show up on the computer or itunes, and all attempts to restore have failed. Ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thx
Ipod device is act like a usb device.. run device manager and removed auknown device specially usb storage, the restart your computer... its all reset the usb driver installlation
Try the Pod classic Troubleshooting Assistant http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/ it will guide you through to a happy solution
If you don't mind losing your songs,
Hold down the play and menu buttons (or play button and select button) at the same time for about 5-seconds.. That should reset the ipod...
have you tried connecting it to another computer and see if it is recognized?? Perhaps your usb/firewire port has a problem, or needs a driver update.
If you plug something else into that usb port on the system, does windows see it?
Have you tried completely uninstalling Itunes software and re-installing it?

I know you tried to fix it, but trying multiple times may work.
The message "go to
www.apple.com/support/ipod" usually is preceded by, or followed by, the
Apple logo or the sad face icon. It directs you to the Apple support
site because either the iPod software is corrupted or their is a
hardware problem. You should try to reset the iPod (try several times). If that doesn't right the iPod, then try to restore it (which will erase the entire iPod and reload the software.
Follow the links above and see if that gets your iPod working. You might want to see if you can update the iPod/iTunes software or try this troubleshooting guide. If it is really a hardware problem then your iPod needs to be taken in for service.
Here is what someone said might help.
If the systray icon has a red X in it then the iPod isn't mounted. When
you connect your iPod, and there's a red X thru the icon, then you
probably won't see the iPod in Windows Explorer either i.e. it isn't
mounted by windows and therefore nothing can be done with it.
This means that there's something wrong with the communication between the iPod - firewire - Windows.
Is the firewire properly installed? [check f.e. your hardware
settings/device manager and check if there's no exclamation mark
somewhere and/or if there's a IEEE1394 bus host controller; if there is
check the device status by double clicking on it]
Very often the software that Apple blessed us with causes connection
problems. The funny thing is, is that none of it's needed. Windows will
by default register your iPod as an external hard drive w/o any
software installed at all.
Knowing that, when you run into problems, it's best to uninstall
everything that came on the Apple CD and see if at least the iPod shows
up as a drive in My Computer. If it doesn't, you can pretty much bet
it's a firewire or iPod problem, if it does...well you're in business
because you can use other programs to upload tunes.
With that background, here is what I recommend:
1. Uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin from Add/Remove Programs.
2. Uninstall the "iPod Manager" from Add/Remove Program.
3. Reboot your PC.
4. Connect the iPod.
It should say "Do Not Disconnect" on it. And the iPod should appear as an external drive in My Computer.
If you get that far. You might want to check the "Software Compendium"
sticky on the Windows>Software board for recommendations of other
programs to use. MMJB is pretty much known as the worst iPod uploading
program out there.
you can always try to reset it [hold the buttons menu+play simultaneously for 15 secs or so].

you can check out this link and see if it helps at all

alright, since I can't figure out any more solutions after searching all this time, I recommend contacting apple about this problem either by their website, email, or phone, if you need this info let me know, but if none of the above works, I would definitely contact them asap.
Thank you and have a Good Day.
Let me know if you need anything else, I am glad to help but all of the known solutions that I know of are here.
Let me know if you can get it working but most likely you will end up calling apple and possibly sending it into them. Good Luck.

I have tried that many times! It still does not work.
Unfortunately, when I looked through my "add/remove" programs, I did not see either the MMJB ipod plugin, orthe ipod manager. The problem first occured while the unit was plugged into a car adapter/FM transmitter. From that point on, it didnt work either on external power or ipod battery. The funny thing is, the apple icon will appear as soon as I try to reset, and sometimes it will come up with the red x icon, and other times it will show the "restore with Itunes". I have the latest version of Itunes as well. I am not the greatest at computers, is the firewire simply the USB to Ipod data xfer wire? Thx
I checked out the link, and I dont believe it will help. However,... I forgot to mention that my Ipod was already set to disk mode when the failure occured. I have tried to restore, and change to/from disk mode. Nothing. Thx!
Perhaps I mistook firewire for firmware. From what I read, perhaps I am wrong, the firmware for the ipod comes from the Itunes updates? If that is the case, I have not been able to connect to itunes at all, but I have the latest update. It seems to me (obviously) that the ipod freeze, and not being able to connect are interrelated. Do you have any additional ideas? Thanks!
SYNOPSIS: 80G Ipod classic, frozen while in disk mode. I have attempted multiple resets, to no avail. Most recently, I held the menu and select buttons at the same time for a reset, and continued holding. The hard disk activated three times before the "restore using itunes" screen came up. The ipod does not show up as a device on my PC nor in itunes (which as the latest update). Per bestdarngood's advice, I searched for the MMJB ipod plug in and the ipod manager in my "add/remove" programs, but they are not there. Any additional help will be appreciated! Thanks,....
I have tried that, several times. The thing refuses to restore at all.
Bestdarngood, I appreciate the help. I know I am grasping at straws here, but thanks anyways!
The Ipod does not show up on the PC or Itunes at all. I tried reseting and reformatting as well.
