Check thermostat setting. If that does not do the trick check to see that your auto defroster is working properly - if ice is forming on rear panel of freezer that is definitely the problem and the defrost heater element is burnt out and needs replacement. How are your door gaskets - tight? Evaporator fan working?
There is normally a "thing" that controls the auto defrost I had a freezer that started so it this out of the blue. Some how that "thing" got unplugged. It was in the freezer behind a panel in the back by the light.
Make sure defrost drain is completely cleared of ice and anything else obstructing it. Pouring hot water in it is correct, but make sure it is going all the way through to defrost pan under unit.
I have had the same problem with ice forming. I found the problem is from the ice maker. The water fill tube delivers water to a plastic piece that acts like a funnel. The water goes through this plastic piece into the ice maker. Ice forms in the plastic funnel piece causing the water to overflow into the ice bin and freezer.
Your defrost drain hole is frozen closed.
Remove the back freezer panel and defrost the ice with a hair dryer.
Once the drain is clear poura 1/4 cup bleach in the drain hole.
You said, you have a Kenmore bottom Freezer Model 596.73503201. It works fine but the freezer has stopped defrosting. Any suggestions?

Is this a result of defrost melt liquid winding up in the bottom of the unit? Find out why it is not draining properly into the pan. A slight bit of frost is normal.
