This is because you've got the screen rotation lock on
To turn it on or off, do the following:
In iOS 7 or higher, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal Control center. (In iOS 6 or lower, double tap the home button on the front of the iPhone or iPod touch. This will reveal the fast app switcher row of apps at the bottom of the screen)
In iOS 7, tap the lock-and-curved-arrow icon. If it is white, it's on; black and it's off
In iOS 6 or earlier, swipe left to right to reveal the Music app, music player controls, and on the far left, an app with a curved arrow in it (if the lock is turned on, you'll see the lock inside the arrow)
To turn screen rotation lock on, tap the curved arrow icon so that the lock appears
To turn screen rotation lock off, tap the icon so that the lock disappears
When you're done in either version of the iOS, single tap the home button and you'll be returned to normal operation of your device.
Your iPhone is stuck on that white screen of death and your palms are sweating..... chill sit back, hold down the Boot & home button for about 5 mins always does the trick.........
first thing I'd have you do is plug it in and see if you get a charging display on the screen. If you still don't see anything at all hold the home button and sleep/wake button for about 20 seconds. Many times this is all it takes. If it is just a software issue you should see the screen go white with a black apple. There was an issue with the 4 in the past (mine had this as well) where at 50% charge it locked completely. This did the trick. Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll give you some more possible steps. Where did you get the phone and what carrier?

It's not 10 seconds. Hold down the home and the power button for about 15-30 seconds till the screen goes black. You will notice little lines in the screen, which is totally normal. Keep holding till the apple logo shows back up..
Hold the power button for 3 seconds and without releasing the power button, push and hold the home button and continue holding both buttons until you see the apple logo, once the phone goes off, if it doesn't come back on by it's self, then just power it on as you normally would.
When the iPhone
crashes or locks up in a way that prevents the iPhone from
responding to the normal iPhone
restart procedure, you need to reset the iPhone. Resetting the
iPhone is simple.
Reset the iPhone by holding the sleep/wake button at the top right of
the device and the home
button at the bottom center of the face at the same time. Hold them
both until you see the screen go black and the white Apple logo appear.
When this happens, you can let go - the iPhone is rebooting.
put it in DFU mode while connected to the computer.
to
do this, hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds and then
let go of the power but keep on holding the home for 10 secs. the
screen will be black and nothing will show up. go to itunes and click
on your ipod on the left. then click restore. this should work.
hold down the home screen button and button at the same time, it will perform a reset. wait until the screen goes black and you see the white apple logo to reappear. when you see the logo let go and it should be fine.
