Hi,

This message means that the fan on your CPU (processor) is failing or has failed. This is not good because if the fan on the CPU fails your CPU will overheat and cause your machine to lock up and become non-functional till it cools down and then the same cycle will repeat till the fan is replaced.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

i understand but the fan does work during bootup for about 5 seconds how can i test the fan to determine if it is bad or if something else is causing the problem?

  • Anonymous May 14, 2010

    Thanks for your response!!

Step 1 Turn on your computer with the side of your case still removed.
Step 2 Download "Prime95 stress test." This program will ensure your processor is working at 100% capacity.
Step 3 Run the stress test and watch your fan. If it begins to spin faster after the stress test has started then your fan is functioning properly.

    Procedure is explained below :-

    http://www.playtool.com/pages/prime95/pr...

The Software could be Downloaded from :-

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

    Thanks
for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Does not boot up, fans start, internet plugs light, clicks on and off.....seems this is a common problem for these machines, what is the fix?

Instructions
  1. When you press the Power button to start the boot process, the LED lights glow while the computer verifies that there is sufficient electrical power to activate the hardware.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LED lights on the computer do not glow or the LEDs blink briefly and then stop. There is no sound of the fan or hard drive spinning, and the screen remains blank. The computer will not start if there is insufficient battery or AC adapter power.
  2. The BIOS queries various hardware components used for the startup boot process.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow but there is no fan or hard drive sound. The LEDs may glow briefly and then go out.

    Or

The LED lights blink, stop, and then blink a second or third time, but there is no sound from the computer and the screen remains blank. The sequence of the blinking lights indicates a specific error code.

    Or

A series of beeping tones is heard. The sequence of beeping tones indicate a specific error code.

If a hardware component has recently been replaced, or if the PC has been jarred or shaken, there may be a loose connection to the memory chips or hard drive which prevents the computer from starting.
  3. The BIOS loads the basic input (keyboard) and output (advanced LEDs / display screen / boot drives) devices into memory.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow, the fan or hard drive sounds, are heard, but then the boot process stops and a black screen - with an error message - displays.

The boot check has detected a communication error or conflict with a hardware component that must be corrected.
  4. The BIOS loads the Windows operating system and starts the services that allow low-level control of all of the background operations.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow, the fan or hard drive sounds, are heard, the HP or Compaq Logo displays on a black screen, but then the boot process stops and a blue screen - with an error message - displays.

The boot check has detected a hardware driver error or a software conflict that must be corrected.
  5. Control is transferred to the Windows loader to initiate the display of the advanced settings in the Windows environment.

The Windows logo displays during this step.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the computer performs all the steps in the boot process, but after the Windows Logo displays, the moving Windows progress bar or the rotating cursor stops moving and the boot process stops.

An error message may display on a screen with the Windows logo. In some instances, there is no specific error message.

    Or

A black screen appears and the computer attempts to restart.

The Windows self-check has detected a software conflict that must be corrected.

"Fan error" error message

Have you had ur laptop for a while? If so it could be dust build-up, but when ever I came across a fan error it was usually due to the fan dieing out. Can you hear the fan at any point or is there no sound at all. If the fan is making no sound then you wont be getting much out of your laptop. Ive done more repairs for desktop fans and such, but laptop one might be a little more tricky to remove. Best thing to do if your not handy with this area is bring it to a computer repair shop. If the computer is new enough and still under warranty you should notify the warranty company of your problem.

I was doing a recovery, when all of sudden the laptop stopped and gave some error message. It will not boot up at all. When power button pressed the laptop starts up fan runs for a while and then nothing...

Hello, You'll need to load the cd recovery disk that came with your computer into your cd drive and restart your computer. All factory recovery cd's are self booting. If you can't boot from the recovery cd you might have a bad disk or a hardware problem.

I have to hit the f1 key to continue the bootup process. Then I get a defective fan error message, but the fan is running, becasue I can hear it.

there may be more than one fan-- there also is a setting in the BIOS to disable the fan warning if you are SURE that the fan it is monitoring is working correctly.

Itronix VR-1 Go Book Fan Failure message

After bios upgrade had same problem. DISCONNECT AC POWER PULLED BATTERY FOR AT LEAST 5 MINUTES THEN REATTACHED BATTERY AND FAN WORKED ON NEXT RESTART. Also make sure boot menu ( tap F12 at start-up) is set to boot from Hard Drive. I also started on battery power with no ac adapter.

Dll and exe corrupt errors, causing shutting down after booting

Easy solution is there :
Check the fan with external power (12v. DC). If damaged replace it. Give a clean windows installation when the fan is OK.
If your mainboard does not supply power to the fan than you have a major problem with mainboard. Replace mainboard.
