Agitating My Maytag top load washer will not agitate in the permanent press and normal cycles. It will agitate in the delicate cycle however. It fills, spins, and empties at the appropriated times also.

First be sure your not using a delicate cycle. If the agitator uses Dog agits, the bottom half of the agitator will move back and forth while the top half moves in one direction. If the dog agits are broken, you would be able to hold the top half of the agitator still while the washer is on.
This is probably a timer problem. In maytag washers the motor turns in one direction to wash, the opposite direction to spin. The timer decides which direction to start the motor.
