This is what you are going to do, go to your inbox and before you Open the inbox messages click on the "Options" do you have the delete property on the display? If you you can now go ahead and delete per message. If this fails to work then you can go ahead and open the messages in the inbox. When you open one of the messages click on the Options to see if you have the delete property. If you do you can as well proceed to delete.
Do this and i bet you your problem would be solved.
Two possible problems here, the new messages could be server messages, your inbox is completely full and there (unfortunately) really is no choice to but to delete either a large number of the messages in your inbox or delete all. If that doesn't work it needs to be taken into a retailer to be either repaired or trashed. Had a similar problem with the same phone and i had to delete all my inbox messages and it still showed that i had messages and they were server messages.
Check and see if someone has sent you a picture message that you haven't downloaded yet. If you have one, it will tell you that you haven't opened it, and all you need to do is download it if you want that to stop. Or you could just delete the message. It's not a big problem that will mess up your phone, it's just telling you something. (:
I would definitely reset the phone, unless you can find a way to clear the text messages out before it crashes to the Main Menu. My guess is that you have a corrupted text message in your inbox, and it is crashing the software.
Resetting the phone will wipe out all of the data on it, so make sure you back it up first. If you have the Motorola Phone Tools, you may also want to try accessing the text messages or updating the phone software through it first.
