This should automatically be done by the tv. If you input to a standard def input (ie yellow plug) or are using standard def cable it will be 480. If u change to a HD input or an HD channel it should automatically switch to 1080. The input displayed on the tv that says 480i or 1080i is just a result of what is being played, not a setting to be changed.

SOURCE: adjusting the resolution from 480i to 1080i

Typically TVs will auto adjust to the input signal it receives. If your cable box is only outputting 480i then all the tv will show is 480i. Ensure you have a good 1080i signal going in to the unit and check again

SOURCE: How to change from 480i to 1080i

The TV has a automatic scalier chip installed so it depends on the input signal that you are using. For example you are using a HDMI connection with a xbox 360 and you set the display setting to 720P then the TV will display it in 720P. If you set it to 480P then it will display it in 480P.

I have a 47" Visio 1080p. Tv is always set at hdmi

AV inputs are for standard analog video which is 480i. HDMI and Component inputs are the high definition inputs that run at either 1080i or 1080p You won't ever get 1080i or p through AV inputs.

How do i change from 480i to 1080i on a sharp 52"

You don't. The TV picture will be fuzzy when watching a program in 480. If you have a lot of video in 480 or 720 you can get an up scaler. They are expensive, but that is the only way you'll ever get a Hi def picture from a low resolution signal

Want to change my sharp hd tv from 480i to 1080p

You Can Not Change. The TV Recognize the signal on the INPUT.
If the signal is 480i than the tv shows 480i
If the signal is 1080p than the tv shows 1080p (if supported)
If you try with your areal antenna (for now digital broadcast is maximum 1080i (in USA) The TV itself doesnt "upconvert" lower resolution signals.
