You will need to put in your windows disc and press f8 or whatever you need to press to gain access to your bios settings once in set your pc to boot from cd not h/d it will begin set up for a new install and ask if you want to install a third party sata disk etc click yes at this and follow prompts, restart pc and change bios settings back to h/d detection should then work.

I'm trying to install WD Caviar Green 1TB in my Dell Dimension 4600. It appears as though the exhisting hard drive used a SATA connection w/molex power connection. I have tried downloading the WC...

I BELIEVE THAT WD PROVIDES A CD WITH "WD DATA LIFEGUARD UTILITIES." IF YOU USE THAT DISK AND SELECT "DRIVE TO DRIVE COPY" SELECTION. THIS SHOULD CREATE A CLONE OF YOUR ORIGIONAL DISK. SELECT THE NEW DRIVE TO BOOT FROM EITHER IN BIOS SETTINGS OR FROM THE BOOT SELECT "F12" OPTION.
THE PC SHOULD BOOT FROM THE NEW DRIVE IF SELECTED

How can I open my Dimension 4600 in safe mode?

Power the PC down then power it up. As soon as the power comes on, Keep pushing F8 until you get a start menu. Safe mode will be one of the options.

Dimension 4600 bios dosen't see SATA HDD

Just reload the SATA drivers, you can use an xp disk and select F6 when ask if you want to install 3rd party driver,Just have the driver disk ready when it ask for it and use the second repair option instead of the first to prevent a total reinstall.

Ram

It appears to support either PC2700 or PC3200 DDR memory. (The PC3200 is faster).

I would like to change my hard drive

If you are looking to save just a "small" bit of $ .. 2 - 1GB sticks should be cheaper .. but what is the current configuration . is it 1 - 1GB or 2 - 512MB or 4 - 256MB?

You have the option of IDE or SATA drive so either is an option .. You may want to get a drive copy utility and just "clone/ghost" your current to the new drive and then swap it to master and GO

Hard drive

at first you have to check it out, whether your hard drive is related on ide or sata. sata is the new technic used now in the recent years. ide is the old technic that comes with the wide bus cables. but sata is a small red colored cable that transfers data more faster than ide.
after that, you have to check it out the mother board settings for connecting with sata cable. because, the older pc have no more settings for sata. if it is available means, no problem to update your hard drive. or you can just go for external hard drives.

Ethernet Controller

Hi

E210882 is a number found on more than one Dell System Board. Dimension 8400 and 4600 come to mind. Possibly there are more. Secondly, E210882 is not a Dell Part number (DP/N or DS/N). While Dimension 8400 is a 775 socket, Dimension 4600 is a 478 socket. So they don't fall to the same family.

In any case the network controllers used on Dell System Boards are Intel and Broadcom.

To proceed, at least provide/confirm the system model. If this is not available, give the Dell Part Number.

Slave drive into Dell Dimension 5100

Yes it does. It may not have an IDE cable if using SATA hard drive, but it does have a port on the motherboard to plug in the cable you take from your 4600.

Hard drive installation

You should be able to install that drive. The biggest variable is if it is a SATA or PATA drive. This model was built for SATA drives, but I think you may be able to get a PATA drive to work with the right adapters.

For the step by stem directions see the link below. It will take you right to the Dell support page. Refer to the "Adding a Second Hard Drive" section.
