Acura Coupes and Sedans 1986-1993 Repair Guide
Fuel Filter

Print
The recommended change interval for the fuel filter on all models is 60,000 miles under normal service. Severe service will require more frequent changing of the fuel filter.
The filter is located in the passengers side of the engine compartment.

CAUTION Before disconnecting any fuel lines, be sure to open the gas tank filler cap to relieve any pressure in the system and wrap a shop towel around the fuel line fitting before opening. Observe all fuel handling precautions.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Wrap a shop towel around the fittings and using a proper wrench, slowly loosen the fuel line fittings.
  3. Remove the 2 banjo bolts from the fuel lines.
  4. Remove the fuel filter clamp retaining bolt and the clamp.
  5. Remove the filter from the vehicle.

It is very important that ALL of the fuel line banjo bolt washers be replaced every time the banjo bolts are loosened. If the washers are not replaced the fuel lines will leak pressurized fuel causing the risk of fire or explosion.
  1. Install the new filter in position and tighten the clamp mounting bolt to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2. Attach the banjo fittings with new washers in place. On Legend and Vigor, tighten the fuel line flare connector to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm). On the remaining models, tighten the banjo fitting bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.

Fig. 2: Using a 21mm back-up wrench and a 16mm wrench on the line, loosen the feed line from the filter 91141p83.jpg
Fig. 3: Carefully unthread the feed line from the filter and . . . 91141p84.jpg
Fig. 4: . . . remove the filter from the retaining bracket by pulling the filter outward 91141p85.jpg
NOTE: The vehicles covered in this manual are equipped with "Quick Connect'' fuel fittings. For more information regarding these fittings, please refer to Section 5 of this manual. An inline filter can be found in the fuel feed line attached to the rear crossmember of the vehicle. CAUTION
Before disconnecting any component of the fuel system, refer to the fuel pressure release procedures found in Section 5.
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined in Section 5.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  3. Grasp the filter and nylon fuel line fitting on the tank-to-filter line. Twist the "quick-connect'' fitting 1?4 or a turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Use compressed air to blow out the dirt from the fittings at the end of the fuel filter.
  4. Detach the quick-connect fitting by pushing inward toward the filter and grasping the plastic tab around the connector and pull apart. If additional assistance is required to disconnect the fitting, tool J 38778 or equivalent can be placed between the filter and the fitting release mechanism to carefully force the two apart. Be careful not to bend the special tool. NOTE: Always use a back-up wrench anytime the fuel filter is removed or installed.
  5. Using a backup wrench (where possible) to prevent overtorquing the lines or fittings, loosen and disconnect the feed line from the filter. Be sure to position a rag in order to catch any remaining fuel which may escape when the fittings are loosened.
  6. Remove the fuel filter from the retaining bracket. To install:
  7. Before installing a new filter, apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter. This will ensure proper attachment and prevent a fuel leak.
  8. Position the filter into the retaining bracket with the directional arrow facing away from the fuel tank, towards the throttle body. NOTE: The filter has an arrow (fuel flow direction) on the side of the case, be sure to install it correctly in the system, with the arrow facing away from the fuel tank.
  9. Push the connectors on the quick-connect fitting together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place. Pull on both ends of the connection to be sure they are secure.
  10. Connect the fuel feed line to the filter, then tighten, using a backup wrench to prevent damage, to 20-22 ft. lbs. (27-30 Nm).
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the fuel filler cap, then start the engine and check for leaks.

How do you change fuel filter on 6.0 2003 sierra gmc

Fuel filter is normally located along the driver's side frame rail, inboard side between the back to the driver's door and the fuel tank.
It looks kind of like a small tin can with the fuel line attaching at the rear and front of the unit. It may be somewhat rusty or dirty after a few years on the vehicle. I suggest looking for it and once you find it, spray a small amount of penetrating oil on the threads of the fuel line connectors the day before you plan on removing it.
Then, simply turn the line fittings with a tight fitting wrench or line wrench so you don't round the corners off the fittings. The back fitting into the filter turns upward (counter clockwise) and the front turns downward (still counter clockwise) to remove the old one.
There is a plastic band around the filter holding it in against the frame. Unsnap the band and it is removed. Have a rag or paper towel standing by as it may drip a little gasoline. Then dispose of them in your trash can after shaking any fuel out in a safe and proper place.
The fittings do not require sealant as they are compression fittings like. The new filter is marked with an arrow for the direction of fuel flow. If your Fuel line has the quick disconnect for the fuel filter, your going to need to buy the disconnect tool and that can be picked up where your buy the fuel filter and the fitting on the filter will show if your have the quick connect lines.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

Where is the fuel filter in a 1992 Cadillac Deville CP?

Generally, GM products from this era have an external canister type fuel filter near the gas tank underneath the car by the rear axle.

The following illustrates the proper procedure for changing:

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
Never smoke when working around gasoline! Avoid all sources of sparks or ignition. Gasoline vapors are EXTREMELY volatile! WARNING
Fuel supply lines on all vehicles equipped with fuel injected engines will remain pressurized for long periods after engine shutdown. The pressure must be relieved before servicing these fuel systems.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Depressurize the fuel system.
  3. Remove the filter bracket retainer.
  4. For plastic type fittings:
    1. Grasp the filter and one fuel line fitting. Twist the quick connect fitting 1⁄4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat for the other fuel line fitting.
    2. Squeeze the plastic retainer release tabs and pull the connection apart. Repeat for the other fitting.
  5. For metal type fittings:
    1. Use a fuel pipe quick-connect separator J37088 or equivalent. This is available from your local parts store.
    2. Insert the tool into the female side of the connector, then push inward to release locking tabs. Pull the connection apart. Fig. 1: There are a couple of fasteners that need to be removed to access the filter. This is one of them 91041p71.jpg
Fig. 2: Some models utilize a plastic fitting on the fuel filter 91041p74.jpg
Fig. 3: Twist the fuel line back and forth while holding the filter still. This will loosen any dirt caught in the connection 91041p75.jpg
Fig. 4: Squeeze the tabs on the plastic line to free them from the lock 91041p76.jpg
Fig. 5: Slide the hose off the front end of the filter first. It's easier to work with 91041p77.jpg
Fig. 6: Remove the other fitting in the same manner 91041p78.jpg
Fig. 7: After removing the fuel line from the other side, you can now slide it out of the sleeve and remove it from the vehicle 91041p73.jpg
Fig. 8: The filter is typically attached to this bracket 91041p72.jpg
Fig. 9: Remove the filter from this bracket before installing the new filter 91041p69.jpg
      To install:

Where is the fuel filter on buick lasbre 1995

  1. Open the hood and disconnect the battery negative terminal using a wrench. This cable is usually black and is connected to the battery post with the minus (-) sign next to it.
  2. Loosen the fuel filler cap.
  3. Look for the fuel supply manifold on the top area of your engine. The manifold is where the fuel injectors connect. Then look for the fuel pressure test port, a small valve on the manifold that resembles the air valve on your LeSabre tires.
  4. Wrap a shop rag around the pressure valve and depress the small stem inside the valve with a small screwdriver. Use the rag to catch the spray of fuel when you depress the valve. Depressing the valve will relieve the fuel system pressure.
  5. Raise the rear, passenger side tire and wheel assembly using a floor jack. Place a jack stand under the frame and lower the vehicle.
  6. Locate the fuel filter. The fuel filter is in front of the rear, passenger side tire, mounted on the frame rail. Wear goggles when working with the fuel filter.
  7. Wrap a shop rag around the fitting of the fuel line coming from the gas tank and leading to the filter. Twist the fitting 1/4-turn in each direction to release any dirt that may have lodged between the filter nipple and the line fitting.
  8. Grab the fuel filter with one hand and with the other hand press on the two fitting tabs as you pull the line fitting from the filter to disconnect it. Use the shop rag to absorb any residual fuel that may come out of the line once it is disconnected.
  9. Hold the filter nut on top of the fuel filter with a back-up wrench. Use a flare wrench to unscrew the fuel line retaining nut, which is connected to the top filter nut. Use the shop rag to absorb any residual fuel that may come out of the line.
  10. Loosen the filter bracket attaching bolt using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Slide the filter out of the bracket.
Reverse is the process for installation.

How to change the fuel filter on a daewoo lanos

Your best choice would be to get a fuel line disconnect tool. I believe daewoo uses the same type as those used on GM vehicles. Through personal experience, I recommend being very careful as the plastic disconnect on the side leading from the fuel tank can be very brittle and easily break.

Sometimes, there is not enough clearance to use the disconnect tool. You clamp this device around the tube of the fuel filter, and push it up into the fitting on the fuel line. It's purpose is to retract the 4 retaining fingers in the fuel line fitting which are spring loaded radially. These fingers tightly grip a flange on the filter tubing. From my own experience, I had to cut the fuel tubing at the body of the filter with a hacksaw. Then you can see what's going on, and maybe use the disconnect tool. I had to use a plastic sleeve for this purpose that you can buy in a kit at an auto parts store (about $10). Once the retaining fingers are retracted, you can pull the end of the filter tube out of the fuel line fitting. Be prepared to yank, pull, push, swear, curse, and maybe cry and pray. If you're lucky, the rest of the fuel filter tube will come out, you won't break anything, and your marriage will still be intact.

Good luck (remember rated this help).
