My Western Digital hard drive fell off the desk and now won't turn on. The light flashes for a second but the drive doesn't spin. I don't really care about the info because it's just a back up of what's on my desktop and laptop and both of those are fine (knock wood). However, I want to know if it's worth it to have it repaired. Do I need to send it back to WD? Bought at Costco probably less than a year ago. I don't want to take it there with my information still on it. Any thoughts?
Hello 4foodfamily. You can open the case and remove the hard drive and connect it to the desktop internally to see if it works, but you will void the warranty. So If you take it to Costco they wont be able to "see" your files anyways because they need expensive equipment to be able to image a copy from a damage drive such as Deepstar disk imager (around $6000) and of course they dont have that. WD wont even spend time searching for your files because they receive hundreds of HDs per day for repair so I wouldnt be worried about that.
If you REALLY have sensitive information you will have to buy another hard drive.
I hope this helps.
SEND IT BACK TO WD
They will give you a replacment trust me I done this. I think you crashed the hard drive but go to this websitee www.westerndigital.com fill out the RMA form, do not say you dropped it you might not get a new drive then. Mine fell of the table too!! and i got 3 for the price of one witch was a free exchange anyhow.
Good luck
