WD My Book Won't Turn On After Fall

My Western Digital hard drive fell off the desk and now won't turn on. The light flashes for a second but the drive doesn't spin. I don't really care about the info because it's just a back up of what's on my desktop and laptop and both of those are fine (knock wood). However, I want to know if it's worth it to have it repaired. Do I need to send it back to WD? Bought at Costco probably less than a year ago. I don't want to take it there with my information still on it. Any thoughts?

Hello 4foodfamily. You can open the case and remove the hard drive and connect it to the desktop internally to see if it works, but you will void the warranty. So If you take it to Costco they wont be able to "see" your files anyways because they need expensive equipment to be able to image a copy from a damage drive such as Deepstar disk imager (around $6000) and of course they dont have that. WD wont even spend time searching for your files because they receive hundreds of HDs per day for repair so I wouldnt be worried about that.
If you REALLY have sensitive information you will have to buy another hard drive.
I hope this helps.

They will give you a replacment trust me I done this. I think you crashed the hard drive but go to this websitee www.westerndigital.com fill out the RMA form, do not say you dropped it you might not get a new drive then. Mine fell of the table too!! and i got 3 for the price of one witch was a free exchange anyhow.

Wd3200 aajs external drive light flashes and won't come on.

Get a new case and transfer the hard drive to the new case. You can get cases at any store that sells computer parts and several places online.

Left my wd book elite unplugged awhile. now computer won't recognize it. plugged in same way and in same position on my desk

Try plugging the usb cable directly to a usb port on your computer and not through a usb hub. Also make sure the ac adapter for the Western Digital is getting power and the light on the drive is on. Also a recent update to your virus program could be blocking it( it happened to mine).

The adapter to my Western Digital Book does not respond

The monitor requires a adapter with a current output of 4 amps. but the Western Digital Book adapter can only supply 2 amps (half the current required by the monitor).
This means using the WD adapter on the monitor will stress this adapter beyond its capacity and continual use of this adapter on the monitor will cause it to fail and/or switch off if it has overload protection.
If you are having problems with the 2 amp adapter on the WD Book, then the power adapter could be faulty or it maybe OK when the adapter cools down.
I suggest you get a 12 volt 4 or more amps adapter for the monitor.
You may need an adapter for the WB book too if the adapter is faulty.

Dropped WD My Book 500GB

Sounds like the end. One thing I've tried, with some limited success, is to put the drive in a freezer for several hours. I've had the drives work for a little while; longer if I wrapped them in ice packs. This worked on drives that were working and stopped; I don't know about one that was dropped. Doesn't cost anything; worth a try. One thing; if it does work, get the files off right away. It never works for long.

Western Digital External Hard Drive Won't Boot Up

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.

Dropped HD about 6 inches

Try oppening the case, and seeing in all of the cables are tightly attached, and if none of the boards inside are damaged, otherwise, you might have a problem.
