Problem with Code reader not reading from 1998 jeep cherokee 4wd

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4WD. Running ok right now BUT when hooking code reader to it, it won't show any reading (like there is no power in the computer). The code reader is not defective - it works on all the other vehicles. Any idea why this would happen and what are the consequences of driving the vehicle if the computer has no juice? Thank you.

There is what is called a bus connection between the place you plug the computer scan tool in and the cars computer. you may have a bad connection between the two....though it isn't giving you problems yet, if you do have something go wrong it will be harder to find out why. At the place you are at now, I'd be torn between leaving well enough alone and actually having a good shop find and repair the problem. Both ideas have their good and bad points. If the job is not done correctly, you may end up having three new problems.

The vehicle wouldn't run without the computer, it may be the code reader is not set up for your vehicle, especially if its a general reader

How to switch 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

that is because you have Part time 4wd? (what do you have)?
and must not drive on pavement free of ice.
its now winding up the drive train, bad for it too.

drive, to dirt, sand, gavel or grass and shift out of 4wd.
or jack up 1 tire, and same,
one tire must be on slippery surface. at least.

this happens on all PT 4wd
or using LOCK on AWD. dont.

1998 jeep cherokee 4wd will not engage

Rock it back & forth a little - the transfer case has simple gearing with no synchromesh. When you rock it a little, the gearing can mesh properly.

It's easier if you're traveling at speed.

Jeep grd cherokee laredo 4.0 6L. 4WD The ABS don't work

I would say someone has disconnected it rather than fix it.
You might find a missing fuse or relay that powers the ABS module, or the module may be unplugged. It could have been removed too.

Can i use a transmition from 1998 grand cherokee laredo 4wd to a jeep laredo 1998 4.0 4wd. will work same trnsmition?

Hi Jose, I've never tried but if you go visit a breakers yard and compare the physical dimensions of both boxes and they match up, there is no reason why they should not. Most manufactures use the same units in a variety of models and if you've found a similar vehicle with identical uses the parts are most likely interchangeable. Regards John
