How To Reverse Stitch On A Singer Sewing Machine Correctly

Step 1. Press the reverse button

• Refer to the Singer manual of the specific machine you have
• Please find the button with the U-shaped arrow, typically at the front of the sewing machine, or check your manual for where it's located
• Press the reverse stitch button and start sewing

Step 2. Start sewing

• Hold the material as the sewing machine sews backward and stop it manually by taking your foot off the pedal
• Deactivate the reverse stitch function by pressing the button again
• Be careful not to hit the thread plate to avoid bunching
• If you accidentally press the wrong button, turn off the Singer sewing machine and turn it on again to reset

To do the basic rectangular button hole, make sure that you have plenty of thread in your bobbin. Put on the button hole foot. Mark your fabric before starting for the button hole locations. Testing the button hole on an extra piece of your fabric is useful for checking the tension balance. Next place your fabric under the presser foot and center the right side of the button hole position with the red alignment marks on the foot. Set the stitch to button hole stitch 1. Turn the hand wheel to bring the needle into the fabric at the point in the center of the needle opening of the presser foot. Stitch to the end of the planned button hole. Use the hand wheel to bring the needle out of the fabric and turn the stitch selector to the button hole stitch 2. Make at least 4 stitches and stop with the needle to the left side of the bottom of the button hole. Raise the needle and set the stitch selector to button hole stitch 3. Stitch back to the top of the button hole. Raise the needle and set the stitch selector to button hole stitch 4. Stitch at least 4 stitches. Raise the needle and the presser foot and remove the fabric. You can move to the next button hole or carefully cut the button hole opening.

Page 17 shows the Reverse Stitch Switch. You only need 3 stitches in reverse to start and end a seam.

Its a no fee download from Singer website. Its for a Singer 457, but its nearly identical machine.

The 437 does not have feed dog down selector <?>, so the dogs should be visibly moving (stepping) as you rotate the handwheel?

Try removing bobbin, put back in, and see if you can bring up bottom thread?

It should still be under warranty. Take it to a Singer technician.

Solution: Turn off machine. Turn stitch dial until you hear click on each stitch shown on dial. Set to straight stitch then and set stitch width to 6. try machine again being careful to put light force on the foot pedal so your not going full throttle. This is how I "de-confused" my Singer Heavy Duty 4423 when it got stuck on reverse. Hope this helps!

The large knob in the center of the stitch length dial is a button, push it in to reverse stitch. Hold in as long as you need to reverse stitch, then release to resume regular stitching.

In the center of the stitch length knob (at the right side of the machine) is a button. You would push that button in to get the machine to reverse.
