when you power on your fax machine and display show DATA ERROR its mean that 3 volts battery on the main board expired and lose all data fax number, logo and related with cartridge ink data so first of all you replace the battery. (this is a pure technical job and if your are not a technician you must take help of a technician) After replacement of battery you power on fax machine and press function key display show DATA REGISTRATION press # display show #1SSSW press left arrow key one time display show TEST MODE press start/copy key display show TEST MODE - press # display show AMI MODE Press 7 display show FACULTY 1-6 press 5 display show INK CHECK 1-2 press 2 and start key display show INK=YES and INS (ink level any one within 100 for example 42/205 you just remember first two digit of lest side) press stop display show FACULTY 1-6 press 6 display show LOST INK CHECK press start/copy key display show LOST INK CHECK - press 2 display show SET LOST CNT press start/copy key display show LOST INK= (here you enter the last left side two digit which you remember for example 42) press start/copy key press stop two times and unplug fax and plug again now your fax machine is okkkkk NOTE:- If you can't get the success first time you must try until you get the success because this is the only way to get success
according to HP
Each ink cartridge has an expiration date. The purpose of expiration is to protect the printing system and to ensure ink quality. When you receive an ink cartridge(s) are expired message, remove and replace the expired ink cartridge, and then close the message. You can also continue printing without replacing the ink cartridge, by following the instructions on the HP All-in-One or the ink cartridge expiration message on your computer screen. HP recommends replacing the expired ink cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of expired ink cartridges. Device service or repairs required as a result of using expired ink will not be covered under warranty.

Your model is a Inkjet printer working on HP TIJ 4.0 technology4. So it cannot work with one valid cartridge. You have to replace all of them to make you printer to work. This is what HP advices and highly recommends.
The Ink cartrdige can be bypassed only in Laserjet printers
We have 2 reset procedures posted on our web page at: www.ccl-la.com Look in the printer section and the HP section. They should get you back going again. Use the C6100 series reset, it should work for your C7280 too.

Check our web site at: www.ccl-la.com/hp.htm We have a step by step guide to correct this problem. This error is caused by air in the ink feed tubes and the guide will help you do a purge on the lines.
I had the same issue with my Photosmart so I checked the HP web site and they said that some cartridges (including HP02) expire but you can override. Try opening the top of the printer and undoing the cartridge latch. Then relatch it and close the top. Worked for me (at least for now)
