Hi, this is for the WRT54GX2 wireless router. I run the setup cd, and after it goes past some screens it asks me for a username and
password, and in the manual it says leave the username blank and enter
"admin" (without the quotes) as the password. I do, and click next, but
it just takes me to that same page (like something's not correct). And
I can't go any further. And it doesn't even connect the main computer
to the internet. I have to completely disconnect the router and just connect the modem to connect to the internet.
When
this first happened, I pressed the reset button in for at least 30
seconds, the one that's in the back of the modem. But it still does
this. Is there anything I can do or try?
ok, first question: Are you running the setup CD while the computer has a physical cable connecting it to the router, or are you trying to do this completely over wireless?'
For most wireless routers, initial setup works best using a physical cable.
also, it's possible that the manual reversed username and password: try USERNAME Admin, BLANK password.

Are you trying to run the CD to setup your router? You can setup your router manually also. Connect the computer to the router and modem to the router. Change the Internet connection settings on the router according to your Internet service provider. Read Linksys router setup
go to command prompt and do ipconfig
find the default gateway, launch internet explorer and in the address box type in the default gateway make sure the router is hardwired as sometimes it does not work on a wireless conection when you configure it.
If you get the router's console page it means that the router is getting detected(you can also ping the gateway on the command prompt to check the same)
on the console page you can fill all the settings and save them..the router will reboot and then you shold be able to use the router with proper internet and wireless settings.
Try to reconfigure the printserver using the setup CD that came with it. Normally that will fix the problem. Make sure the driver of your Printer is installed first before running the printserver setup.
1st. What brand and model # of your router?
2. The router cd should be run only on the computer u have connected to the router with a network cable. Your vista laptop. Is it connected with to the router with a cable?
3. If so, it will be the one used to configure your router for wireless setup. When you ran the setup it should have gone thru Wireless Setup. It will ask you for an SSID. That is a name you will give your wirless network. It can be anything you want. just remember it.
It will also ask you to setup security for your wireless network. follow the instructions to setup a password. write it down. This is an important step so anyone cannot just logon to your wireless signal an start using ur internet connection or gain access to your computers.
4. when u setup your dongle on your kids computer it will search for wireless signals in the area. you will look for the one u setup in the previeous step. you will select it and it should ask you for the passkey you setup. once connected you will have access to the internet.
Think of your router as a private radio station and the wireless usb dongle is the radio. The only way your computers can tune to it is using the dongle and if you know the name of the station (your SSID) and the passkey.
Auto run might be turned off. Click My Computer then click what ever driver you have the CD in ( D: E: ect.) Then find the installation or setup icon. Then follow instructions. It will install drivers then walk you through hooking up the router.
If you are connecting wirelessly, what you can do is change the wireless channel of the router by accessing the router's Setup Page. The distance is also 1 factor so you need to stay in a good range. If you are hardwired to the router, you can try to change the MTU of the router through the Setup Page as well. MTU value should be Manual 1492 and save the changes.
I just upgraded from firmware version 1.01.14 to 1.01.22 and I have the same problem, the router just keeps resetting itself. I think the solution is to go back to the old firmware, but I haven't been able to find a copy yet, Once I find firmware version 1.01.14 for the WRT54GX2 router. I will let you know if this is the solution... :) WRT54GX2
