The needle bent during sewing and since i put the new one in,the main thread is not catching the bobbin thread when the machine is sewing. think it might be something to do with the hook placement as it doesnt seem to go back far enough to catch the thread. its an E&R Classic sewing machine. (a Toyota brand) please help

This is a symptom of wrong timing between the hook and needle in your sewing machine. Try to pull up your bobbin thread by setting your needle to the left and then to the right. If it will bring up the bobbin thread whiled set to the right but not the left you have a timing problem. It can be corrected by a pro but it most likely will need to have some gears replaced also.
Be sure to use a brand new needle. A bent/damaged needle may not connect with the bobbin thread.
If it still does not pick up the bobbin thread, your machine most likely has a timing issue (the needle arrives at the wrong time to intercept the bobbin thread). There are multiple web sites and videos that discuss sewing machine timing. Or take it for service.
Be sure to install a brand new needle. A bent, damaged needle may not connect properly with the bobbin thread.
Check that the machine is correctly threaded top & bobbin.
Hand rotate the handwheel toward you while holding the top thread tail gently. Rotate the handwheel one full revolution. It should pull up the bobbin thread. If it does not, then there is most likely a needle/hook timing issue. What is happening is the needle is not arriving at the bobbin at the correct time to catch the bobbin thread.
You can search the internet for instructions on how to set sewing machine timing (there are lots of web sites & videos). Or take your machine for service.
It could be that the hook timing is adrift but quite likely that the machine is misthreaded or the needle bent. Get a NEW needle, check your handbook for how to insert it and re-read how to thread your machine. The upper thread could be misthreaded or the bobbin not threaded correctly. The bobbin may look like its threaded OK but if the thread is coming off the bobbin in the wrong direction the machine will never see. Hope this helps.
First change your needle... it's probably bent and make sure you are using a needle FOR Denim in a size 18. Hand run the machine... if you still feel it hitting something... it is out of time. Take it in for repair.
You need to sew the first stitch slowly. Lower the needle by hand and take up carefully. Pull the needle thread up and the bobbin thread should be caught in the formed loop and come with it. Pull them both to the back of the machine and sew.
Thanks for using FixYa. The upper thread could be tangled. Remove
the thread completely from the machine. The correct size spool cap should be
used for the size of the thread spool. Re-thread the machine according to
the directions in the manual.
Place a spool of thread on a spool pin and check the upper threading.
Remove the bobbin and make sure the bobbin is threaded
properly in the shuttle race. Remove any loose threads or lint in the shuttle
race.
Also
please check that the bobbin is installed in its case rightly. Needle thread is
too tight. Hold the thread lightly to keep the end from going down
into the shuttle.
The
needle could be thread incorrectly. Thread
the needle eye from the front to the back.
The needle could be bent or improperly inserted and install
a new needle with the flat side of the needle facing the back.

Take out the raceway and check for broken threads/lint. Unthread the machine and put in a new needle taking care to insert it correctly. It may be that the needle is slightly bent. Put everything back carefully and check it is running smoothly with NO THREAD first(no bobbin thread either-use an empty bobbin). This will prove there is nothing catching. If it catches when you thread it then you are having a problem with incorrect threading.
