Lens issues with Nikon D40 camera

We have a Nikon D40 digital SLR camera that we've had for about 3 years now and lately we've been having issues where the lens seems to get stuck and we're not able to adjust it to focus and it won't let us take a picture. When we press down on the button to take a picture nothing happens. Other times, everything works fine. Is this a common problem with this model? Any suggestions?

Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the back of the lens and in the lens mount on the camera body. Does that make any difference?

Have you ever cleaned the contacts on the lens and the camera body where they meet? If not, do so now with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Please recommend digital SLR nikon cacmera for this lens

Any Nikon digital SLR will work with this lens. However, there are two things to consider.

On cameras other than the D700 and the D3 family, the smaller sensor will make the lens appear as a 105-315mm. On the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, and D5000 cameras, you will lose the autofocus capability.

Do the old AF lenses for the Nikon N60 SLR fit the new DSLR cameras

Hi ericm675, Yes they will. What you run into is were one uses a auto focus lens on a newer digital such as a D40. Some of the new digital cameras do not have the drive gear to turn the autofocus on the lens. Those newer cameras use electronics. Look on your camera lens mount at 7:00 you will see the drive pin. Look on your old autofocus lens you should see a slot where that pin fits. Hope this helps you.

Using a Nikon D40 digital slr with a AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200 1:3.5-5.6 G ED lens I was previously able to autofocus bun now am not. Can you suggest reasons why this may be?

Please check if the Autofocus-switch on your lens is set to M/A. Also check if the Autofocus on your camera is switched on. For detailed information about your cameras autofocus, please check this site: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/af-settings.htm

Nikon D40 LCD screen.

Since the camera is an SLR, (single lens reflex), the CCD image sensor is behind the shutter until you take a picture. Sorry, but you cannot use the LCD to take pictures.
