There are two possibilities. Both can be tested from Windows explorer. I'll assume you have XP. Perhaps your drive is not set to auto-play? Double click My Computer. Put a CD in the drive. Does the CD drive now show there is a disc in the drive? You should be able to open the drive folder and see the contents. Try double clicking a song or program to see if it will run.
If everything works this way, then go back to My Computer and right click on the CD drive. Pick properties. Click the AutoPlay tab. Select each item from the pulldown list and for the Action to perform, select "Take no action" to disable autorun, or pick the apporpriate action to take if enabling autorun.
If the CD is not recognized at all, then it is either too scratched or the drive is defective.

My dell latitude D610 will not play dvds

First, and this is probably something you've already verified but I just want to ensure its covered, ensure that your drive is marked as a DVD drive and not just a CD drive. I see on the Dell hardware specs only a small percentage of the D610's came with CD-rom drives but I'd check that first.
Next, you need a program and a decoder for DVD video disks. If you don't have the original program provided by Dell (usually on a CD and usually called WinDVD for the time period that the D610's were sold prominently) I would download a program called VLC. It's a free program that plays a WIDE array of video files and can easy play dvd's (and provide the decoder as well!). It is available here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Hope this helps!

Dell Latitude D610 dvd player won't work

Try a CD ROM lens cleaner. If it fails then I suggest you buy a new one. It is easy to change it: there is a release switch at the bottom with a screw. Open it and remove the old one. Slide the new one into its place.

My dell latitude d610 tries to load windows, but doesn't complete

The operating system may be corrupted and needs reinstalling or repairing. The manual is available online at dell website. But I doubt anything in the manual will help with this problem. Consult a PC Tech to help you rectify the problem. It cannnot be done through this forum.

Module Bay

The D610 second battery is installed in the slot occupied by the CD Rom.
This is an additional omponent that can be purchased to extend the battery life for the laptop.

Unless you have this battery module installed the error is completely normal.

The sound to cd/dvd movies doesn't work

Are you playing a video from the Internet or something you put in your CD/DVD drive?

Go to "My Computer" - right click and go to "Properties". See if anything has a yellow exclamation point. If this is by your sound card it means there is a problem with the driver.

The first thing I would recommend if you do not have any yellow signs there is to go to your sound card in the list. Right click and delete it. Restart your computer. When your laptop restarts the "Found New Hardware" wizard should appear and will automatically install and update your audio drivers. You might need to have your original Windows CD.

Give me more information and I should be able to help you if the above doesn't work.

My Dell Latitude D610 Battery Stopped Working

The battery light flashing RED/AMber is an indication of a failed battery.

Portable batteries have a life expectancy of 300 to 500 recharge/discharge cycles. (roughly 18 months under normal use) After that, the charge life starts to drop off and eventually it will not hold a charge. Because of this, the battery is considered a consumable item and is only warranted for one year from the manufacturer.

Since all the systems listed in the post are D610's (4 to 5 years old) it is not surprising that the batteries are failing.

Dropped Puck, if you replace the battery and a new battery doesn't charge/run the system, then the charging circuit on the MB is failed.
