The drum is the part of the unit that actually does the transfer of the toner onto the paper. Each toner cartridge does about 2,000 pages and the drum needs to be replaced with the ~6th toner cartridge change (varies with use). Order part DR-250 from Brother or any office supply place that would carry the part.
To replace (wait until print quality decreases or it reads change drum now and stops working). Turn off the unit and let it cool. Close the document tray and the extension and open the top cover. Remove the drum carefully and place it where the toner will not spill. Remove the toner cartridge (if it is still good) and set it aside to put in the new drum.
Wrap the old cartridge up and dispose of properly (not in the domestic trash). Keep the new drum out of the light (keep it sealed until needed) as much as possible. Insert the toner cartridge in the new drum. Then insert the unit into the Fax machine. (Hold by the handles) Close the top cover and the starter sheet should be ejected by the machine.
I hope this helps.
