Click on start then click on run. Then in that box type cmd to get to a DOS prompt. It will be a black screen. Then on that screen type:
ipconfig /release. It will release the IP, then you can renew it by typing ipconfig /renew.

What does computer command "ipconf/release" do?

This command will flush the IP address from an active connection. The correct syntax is ipconfig /release *con* which will release all connections. If you just want to see if you can get a new address then use ipconfig /renew
tip

Windows XP: How to release and renew IP addresses

IP addresses can either be assigned manually or automatically. When they are assigned automatically, a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server hands them out and determines which computer or other device gets which address. This process usually flows smoothly, but there are times when you may need to release or renew an IP address even when using DHCP.

There are several ways to release and renew IP addresses in Windows XP. Each procedure is described below.

From the system notification tray:

1. Right click on the network connection icon in the system notification tray.
2. Select Repair. Windows will automatically release the current IP address, reset the network connection, and request an IP address from the DHCP server. (The new IP address that gets assigned may be a different one from before, or it may be the same one.)

From the Start menu:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Right click on My Network Places.
3. Select Properties.
4. Right click on the network connection that is currently in use.
5. Select Repair. (If you choose a network connection that is not in use, Repair will be grayed out.)

For either of the above methods, you can release and renew your IP address manually by clicking Disable instead of Repair, and then right-clicking and choosing Enable.

From the command prompt:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Run.
3. Type "cmd" and press [Enter].
4. At the command line, type "ipconfig /release" and press [Enter].
5. Type "ipconfig /renew" and press [Enter].
6. Type "exit" and press [Enter].

The easiest way to release and renew your IP with a router that doesn't have that feature is to unplug the modem (not the router) for a few minutes - overnight while your sleeping to be sure.

Every time I run the DSL-504 ADSL2 Ethernet Router CD disc to setup my internet connection, always get the dslultility.exe message say "modam not deteched....." but everything is...

To release and renew IP address, go to Start > Run. Type in CMD and press Enter. At the prompt, type in ipconfig and press Enter. This will display the adapter information such as IP address, Subnet mask, and default gateway.

To view additional information such as Mac address, DNS servers, etc, type in ipconfig /all.

To release IP address, type ipconfig /release.

To renew IP address, type ipconfig /renew.

If you are not able to get an IP address try setting one statically:

Windows 2000

Step 1 Right-click on My Network Places and select Properties.

Step 2 Right-click on the Local Area Connection which represents your network card and select Properties.

Step 3 Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. Enter your IP information for your network.

If connecting to a router, make sure the default gateway and a DNS server is the IP address of the router (192.168.0.1).

Windows XP

Step 4 Click on Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network connections.

Step 5 See Step 2 for Windows 2000 and continue from there.

Wireless connection - can not renew the IP address

Here's what you can do Sometimes you can simply right-click the computer icon in the task bar near the clock of your XP desktop (If this icon is present). This will go through a process of resetting your IP address.
But if you do not have this option, you can go to START>RUN and type cmd. At the command line type ipconfig /release (or winipcfg /release in earlier versions of Windows). Then hit ENTER. Next, type ipconfig /renew and you should get a new IP address from the router.
If this doesn't work, renew the IP address. You will have to nullify the IP address on the PC, then shut the computer down. Next, unplug the cable modem for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in again. Once all of the modem lights are green, power up the PC again. It should automatically renew its IP at boot.
Unplug the router, then plug it back in AFTER you plug in the modem, but before you power up the PC. The router will need to supply the PC with a new IP address. Good luck, hope this helps or gives you something to try.

Follow these steps to quickly release and/or renew the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT. Here's How:
  1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Click Run... on this menu.
  3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.
  4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).
  5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.
  6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).
Tips:
  1. If it is not necessary to view the current IP addresses on a computer, simply type 'ipconfig /release' or 'ipconfig /renew' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears in Step 3.

  2. To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on DHCP networks often (but not always) re-establish network connectivity automatically
