Get a new machine. Not "seeing" the disc could be bad laser, transport, electronics, on and on. Given the repair cost, a NEW one is your only practical alternative.
Dear Blondie in Vermont(?),
I agree.... what brand and how much did you pay? If it was a NAME brand you might have a chance with their consumer services division.
Short of it having been dropped (which would probably be visable by a bend, ding or crack) it is surprising that - in normal use - these components would have gotten damaged or just plain QUIT working. Is there anything ELSE you can tell me about the problem with the unit?
For a 4 month old machine it just doesn't make sense - other than it having been dropped by someone. Let me know if there's more to tell.
Laurel.
O.K. Magnavox is NOT one of those schlocky brands so I'd get on their website, call or WRITE customer service (writing a letter suggests to them you're really SERIOUS) and explain your disappointment. Companies DO care about their reputations. Be nice, DON'T be MAD... even though you have a right to be. Explain that it was a Christmas present for your kid, and and he really loved it and then it simply started misbehaving. It may take some time, but you'll probably get some satisfaction. Don't expect and instantaneous solving of the problem; stick with it though.
I KNOW this is unsatisfying, but it will pay off.
NOW, one other thing to help you get a handle on what MIGHT have happened.
First thought: was the DVD player designed to plug into the power socket in your car? or did it need to go through an adapter? Did you use the exact recommended adapter - or a RadioShack Universal adapter? DVD player as well as all other sophistacated electronic devices are not very tolerant of the "wrong" power adapter.
2nd thought (a good possibility - since your problem seems to be microprocessor related) sliding the player in and out of the car - particularly in the winter can generate tremendous static charges which can build up in a unit and literally destroy a part of the circuit board.
Most manufacturers (and definitely MAGNAVOX) know about this and their equipment is designed to deal with this. But there are exceptions.
They STILL may help you out no matter what happened, but I thought this might give you some possibilities about how this might have happened.
Let me know if you have some other thoughts.

It is only 4 months old, for what I paid they should make them last longer, this is frustrating and upsetting.
No it hasn't been dropped. I got it for my son for xmas and aside from a trip in the car it has been taken care of nicely. A month or so ago we had the same problem but after turning the unit off and back on again it several times it seemed to get back to normal. It is a Magnavox 8 1/2 " screen, and I paid $125 for it. More than I would of liked just to have to throw it away shortly after. I sent in the warenty card back after the holidays but heard nothing back, not sure if I normally would once it was registered so I have no clue if they even received it. I am assuming that I can get ahold of them through a web site or some sort, I don't have much experience with contacting these companies......
It only went in the car that once the rest of the time was used in the house. It came with an adaptor from Magnavox and it hasn;t even been used yet. The rest of your info about contacting them is very helpful and I will try getting an address on line. Other than what I just stated I don't have a clue about what is going on with it. My next step will be to contact them, I didn't even know you guys existed until now, I love your web site. Thanks alot!!!
