The symptom of this problem is when you select Show hidden files and folders options under Folder Options and the screen just flashes when you click OK but the hidden files and folders are not hidden. this can be fix with a registry hack:
1. Click Start > Run and type REGEDIT
2. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
then SOFTWARE
then Microsoft
then Windows
then CurrentVersion
then Explorer
then Advanced
On the right side, double click the hidden value and give it a value of 1.
Now you should be able to enable hidden files and folders

Open Folder Options in Control Panel.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
•
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.

On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
For Windows Vista and 7:
1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clickingAppearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
