Why is resolution so dark on my mv520 compaq monitor

The screen resolution and bit color is controlled by the video driver NOT by a driver for the monitor.
Install the correct video driver for your video card and you will be able to increase the screen resolution to over 1024 X 768 and bit color to at least 32 bits.

Your Compaq MV520 Monitor is always blinking every time you turn on your computer and you want to know how you can fix it? First, we need to troubleshoot the problem. I'm thinking you probably need to refresh the flicker rate on your monitor. The flicker rate is probably set on a low setting, which is causing you screen to blink (flicker). This can be bad for your health as well because it can cause eyestrain and headaches. Your monitor is a CRT (Cathode-Ray Tube) model. These types of monitors can cause a lot of screen flickering. Now that we've troubleshooted the problem, now it's time to solve the problem. There are two ways you can solve this problem. You can either refresh the flicker rate or you can buy an LCD monitor. The instructions I'm giving you may sound like this because I'm not sure what your operating system is. I'm not to familiar with Mac Operating Systems, but if you have a Windows Operating System and you need better detailed instructions, just reply back. I'm guessing the different monitors are different sizes? The only thing a driver for a monitor will do will tell the computer the max resolution that the monitor will be able to go up to. However most 90% of monitors can use the built in windows driver without issues. Your best bet is going to be to change the resolution on the monitor. To do this you can either hook up the old monitor, lower the resolution, and then plug in the other monitor. Or you can boot the computer into VGA low resolution mode by pressing F8 as the computer starts up and selecting that option. From there you can lower the resolution, and then put it at something more desirable with the new monitor.
The other possibility being your Gateway monitor is actually malfunctioning and you just happened to hook up a bad monitor.

Try deinstalling the mic and redownload and install fresh driver see how that goes should clear up any glich

Your monitor is operating normally. After Windows starts it is setting the video resolution to something outside of the monitor's range. That's why you see the Windows splash screen, then the message from the monitor about the settings. Most likely the computer was used before with a monitor that had a wider range of resolutions available.

Restart the computer. When the manufacturer's logo screen appears, press the F8 key three or four times. This should get you a startup menu screen. Pick the option of starting in VGA mode, and Windows will start with video settings that your monitor supports.

it could be th epower supply and it could be the monitor.
power ON button should not flash orange regardless what you do. it should stay green. then orange. not orange to green to orange.
try the monitor on another PC if you can fine one.
the other thing is are the 2 monitor similar (CRT to CRT and LCD to LCD), you can't mix the the two, they will work but need different video driver to function correctly.
