I have a HP DeskJet 842 C. I have a black cartridge and a colour cartridge installed. When I try to print out a picture it only prints in black. I have had this printer for several years and it has always printed in colours. What is the matter with it.

BECOS IT WILL FINISH EARLY.BLACK INK COST IS LESSTHAN COLOUR INK CARTRIDGES. SO YOU SHOULD BUY BLACK CARTRIDGE FOR REAL BLACK PRINTING.
The printed colours are an "additive" mix of the "primary" colours in your printer.
So, when the colour ink-jet cartridge is "out-of-ink" on one (or more) of its colours, the "mix" will be off, and the "wrong" colour will be the result.
Change the colour cartridge.
Before changing it, run a "deep-cleaning" cycle, using the HP Support software that was installed when you installed from the CD-ROM that came with the printer, to "clean" any/all "clogged" ink-jets -- i.e., a clog could be preventing one colour of ink from being sprayed onto the paper.
Dear friend, your Black Ink Cartridge is Empty thats why your printer is using the Colour Cartridge to produce the Black Colour. This is the reason you are having Dark Reddish Brown colour instead of Black.
Most likely you have no black cartridge installed or it is empty causing your printer to use the colour cartridge for black. But if your colour cartridge has 1 colour which is less full than the others it causes black to become greenish or sometimes reddish depending on which colour is less. A new cartridge or a black cartridge will solve the problem.
hi, remove the color cartg take a tissue paper and run it horizontaly on the nozzel, if u can notice the three colors, ur cartridge is ok, may be the contact area of the cartridge, try to clean both the surfaces, and install the exact driver for the printer which will give you the cartridge maintenence options. let me know??
