Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
Most of the time when the symptom you describe occurs the flame sensor has failed. It does not sense a flame and as a by design fail safe shut off the gas safety valve.
However... if the burner never does light then there is another fail safe in that being an automatic shut off of the dryer when the burner does not light at all on units with electronic timer controls.
A weak gas valve coil can also cause an early shut down. I.e they are powered, open the gas valve but, can't keep it open.
If there is no airflow... i.e the blower fan hub has failed and it is not turning the burner flame will cause the high limit thermostat to trip. After about 5 minutes you would be able to restart the dryer only to have the whole evolution repeat.
You did not mention a make or model number so it is difficult to go into details on exactly what to do to rectify your dryers' shutting down problem.
Thanks for using FixYa,
Kelly
Hi,
If you are having problems with your
gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor
goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working
properly.
if
you dryer is gas check out this gas

If you have an electric dryer, you can
have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to
heat.
