My neighbor was throwing away her Toshiba 30HF85 TV because it won't come on. I've decided to take it hoping it will be a cheap fix and I can put this TV in my kids' room. When you plug the TV into the outlet, it takes a second...then you can hear the Tube get high voltage for a half-second, then you hear a relay click. That's all she does. No lights whatsoever. Pressing the power button does nothing. If I unplug it for a few seconds and plug it back in...I get the same thing. High Voltage and relay click. No lights.

.Hi Bob,

This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. This is cause by leaky/dried electrolytic capacitor in that section. It will dropped the supply from normal voltage and will disable the unit.It needs a little warm-up to make itself stable but the symptom will get worst until the unit will not even power up. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better that you have acapacitor checker/tester to determine its condition. Your unit will back to normal again if the leaky/dried capacitor is isolated.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

Hope I helped you.

Thanks for using Fixya.

No, do not throw away. completely dry and try again. You can sometimes use a USB keyboard. REplacement keyboards for laptops are surpirisingly cheap, not counting install, but typically install is not serious, often no case opening...Toshiba, however, is sometimes a different story.....

A note about computers, Lower cost and seriously better stability are the reason to look at a new computer. Essentially, with an old machine, you put most of the cost of a new machine into repairs. but you still have an old machine....... Which will fail someday....

I've been fixing consumer electronics for years. If you know what you are doing it's usually extremely cheap to fix.. ie: bad solder joint, blown horizontal oscillator transistor, bad capacitor etc... Parts are cheap.. it's the labor that kills folks which is why I do all my own work.. but then again I have a Electrical Engineering degree. You need to decide how much you would be willing to spend on this TV. Most folks throw them away (unfortunetly) because a typical shop will charge $200 plus to fix these types of issues. So either you learn how to fix this yourself.. lots of help on the internet or pay someone else or donate / recycle it. Or find someone like me that fixes stuff for their friends and family for the price of the parts.

Are you prepared to spend $400 maybe more to fix it? The cat pee isn't the problem. It is either the SSB or power supply.

30HF85 TV with CT-877 remote, which doesn't work.

I had the same problem with my remote...over time it slowly stopped working. (sorry for poor terminology) I noticed that one of the battery terminals was corroded and that the metal connecting the battery to the board was completely gone. I simply swapped this out with one from another remote and now its working fine. Seems the only issue is that the battery was not connected.

I hope this helps.
