My brother mfc 845cw had a paper jam. After, I got the paper out the machine it would not work anymore. The screen continued to say paper jam. I kept thinking there must be some little piece of paper somewhere that I was unable to see. However, I couldn't ever find any more paper stuck anywhere. I went to Brothers website and tried the solutions they had and nothing worked. I had a different model Brother before. So, i made sure each time i opened and closed all the other compartments. There was one thing I did read about putting the black back cover in wrong, that it can mess something up?? maybe a sensor? I did put it in wrong, upside down or something for a minute
and realized it was not fitting. So, I pulled it out and put it in the correct way. Could this be the problem? And, if so can it be fixed? and how? Thanks, Serenity 2007
The problem may not be an actual paper jam. If it makes 2 grinding noises after you plug it in and it resets, or after you lift the top portion and set it back down, that means the gears that should pull in the paper are not being engaged. There is apparently damage to some gear (usually nylon) in the machine. Unfortunately, I have no way to get into it to examine the exact location of the damage. They built it in almost one piece. But there is a design or manufactring defect in this model which rips an internal gear. Repair costs more than a new model MFC-490CW. If I had a repair manual I could fix the old one.

Which two digit error code does the machine display despite paperjam?
Just fixed my Brother MFC 845 CW. I had a paper jam and even though I thought I got all the paper out, there was a small piece stuck over on left corner. I unplugged the machine and then I opened up the cover (under the scanner). There was a black box covering the area. Through tinkering I discovered that you can push this to the right and bingo, you can reach any little pieces of paper caught up in there with needle nose pliers, and I had several. Close cover, replace back and it works great now.

I also encountered a paper jam and followed instructions about how to remove it. Each time, when I pulled the stuck paper from the back as instructed, a little corner on the left side (when viewed facing the back) would tear off and I'd have to remove it separately. I'd open the whole cover as instructed and close. The paper jam display would go away...yet each time I try to print or copy now, the same jam occurs along with a horrible grinding sound as the rollers try to advance the paper unsuccessfully. I too think there may be a tiny shred of paper still stuck in there causing this...or maybe something on the left side of the roller is malfunctioning? I would hate to take this to the repair shop since the repair would probably cost more than I paid for the machine in the first place. Any ideas? Thanks...Carol
