I want to take apart and clean my D4C Rainbow and my E series 1 speed, I bought both of them on Ebay, and both have odors,( They are suppose to be the vacuum that cleans and purifies the air) that leaves the house smelling like smoke, and musk. Sorry, but a Rainbow D4 has no filtration at all. The E series has a HEPA filter that needs replacing. You can put liquid Lysol in the water on the D4 and that will help

The Rainbow D4, D4C and SE all are the same vacuum base, only changes were made to the nozzle. As long as the nozzle cord on your D4 has 2 prongs, not 3 prongs you can use the D4 nozzle that looks like This or the SE PE (SE Performance) Nozzle that looks This
I work on Rainbows. D4C-E2 etc. Not sure what you mean by the top plug in. There are two motors in the rainbow, one in the main unit, one in the power head. Where was the odor coming from? email me back with more info, I can help you with this. Jerry
the se has a newer updated version of the power nozzle. the power nozzle is smaller.the d4c is older
than the se. the attachments are pretty much the same and the se is a darker color than the
d4c
The unit and the nozzle have to be taken apart and cleaned. You almost for sure will need a new HEPA and possibly even the motor cooling filter. There is a lot of dust inside that got moist (moisture in the air,vacuuming wet carpet, maybe you have pets or everything together)
It will require a bit more advanced skills but you do not have to be a vacuum repair professional to do this.

The Rainbow D4C will still work but not @ the highest efficiency rating – the suction will be reduced because the sheetrock dust gets into the motor and the fan blade(s) Quan 3 and would need a professional cleaning 1st or 2nd. Replacement of the motor; if it is too serious and or too expensive. It’s a good vacuum back it is suggested that people use a good Shop Vac for the sheetrock dust removal. If it just quit running, it could be the cord. If you have a meter, you can check it to make sure it isn't broke. Take out the 4 I think, screw from the bottom, the top half should come off, then you get to the switch and the end of the cord. Check the motor brushes also, if they are worn down, they may not be conducting and the motor won't run. It gets involved, so don't know if you want to do this at home.
Take off water tank, remove the screws to separate the top from the bottom, take out the screws inside the top and take out the plastic shell and the switch will be there.
