Dear Scub,
Did you hear a loud crunching sound from the printer before the error code 5100 was displayed?
1. You may need to send in the unit for service. Some Cannon Service offer temporary replacement unit while working on yours.
Checking and do-it-yourself inkjet printer repair is messy.
2.
You can try check if the print head assembly (carriage) moves freely
from left to right. Lubricate/clean if necessary (If your printer has
one) check also the **** strip at the back of the carriage. This is a
plastic film with multiple dark notch like mark. Clean with cotton swab
and light solvent or isoprophyl alcohol.
If these does not solve your problem, guess your back to # 1.
