How to Install a new hard drive
Do you have the original operating system on CD or DVD? also you need the new HD to be a "SATA" if you do read on

1. unplug all cables from computer (power, Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard, speakers, etc.) try to remove static from body and ground yourself.
2. place cpu on a confortable work table (if possible)
3. on the back of the cpu there is 2 screws that hold the side cover, remove those you may have to do both sides.
4. pull the cover towars the back of the cpu to remove.
5. there you would be able to see if you can remove the tray holding the hard drive or if you can get the hard drive out by itself
6. Unplug the 2 cables on the back of the hard drive (power and data)
7. There should be 2 screws on each side of the hard drive remove them.
8. Now pull the hard drive out of tray (that is a go)
9. insert new hard drive in tray and attach side screws
10. connect data and then power to hard drive (can go in in one direction only).
11. place both side cover (don't forget screws) and make sure the covers go in to the tabs so it would not rattle.
12. connect mouse, keyboard, speaker, monitor and power.
that is it
now you just have to reload your operating system with your cd's turn pc on, insert cd's and restart computer, you may have to press on/off switch to turn it off or ctr+alt+del to restart. if the cd is in it may restart and ask you to press a any key to start from cd if not you have to change boot order from BIoS

if it works for you don't forget to rate

thx

SOURCE: How do I factory restore an Emachine w3609?

You might be able to purchase a set of factory image CDs from eMachines, but not all manufacturers make them available. You might also find sets for sale on eBay and from some other vendors.

Without the factory restore CDs, you can still reinstall Windows but you'll need to do a little more work. Download the drivers for your system (audio, video, etc.) from the eMachines website and save them on a flash drive. Find a copy of the XP installation CD for your version. You may be able to borrow one from someone. Do a regular installation of Windows, using the product key from the sticker on your computer. Install the drivers you downloaded as required for anything that Windows doesn't properly detect and support. Then activate your Windows installation.

This is sometimes a good thing to do. Some brands of computers come preloaded with so many "bloatware" applications and programs that try to be helpful that doing a clean install like this gives you a faster system when you're done.

The downside is that any preloaded applications that may be worth having, such as antivirus/antispyware applications, media players or CD/DVD burning software won't be there. You will need to do that yourself. There are plenty to choose from for downloading. My picks are avast! for antivirus use, InfraRecorder for disc burning, Winamp for media playing.

SOURCE: I have an emachine model# W3609. It's very slow

Back up all of your photos, documents, folders, files, favorites (bookmarks) and anything else you would like to keep and reinstall after the system recovery. Use a CD, DVD, flash drive, MP3 or external hard drive to store your data temporarily.
Click on the "System Recovery" icon (usually found within the start menu) and begin the process by following the on-screen prompts.
Click on "restore" and note the warnings about losing all of your data. Wait for the computer to complete the process of erasing the hard drive and creating a new partition.
Insert the emachines recovery disk in the CD tray when prompted. This will start the process. There are usually one or two disks involved and the computer will let you know which ones to insert when and will even eject the tray automatically in most cases. You may have to restart at least three times, do not be alarmed by this and keep the disk in until you are prompted otherwise.

Example of Windows Installation Install Windows on the new partition and follow the prompts on your screen. Be sure to choose the largest partition, the one with the most kb available. There are usually two to choose from, as you have deleted the other ones in the steps prior.
Reinstall all of your backed up data and any software programs you are currently using, including the printer and Internet, if needed. Be sure all of your drivers and hardware is working properly, as they have been reinstalled as well during the recovery procedure. OR

  1. Place the recovery disk that came with the eMachines computer into the CD or DVD drive. Restart the computer.

Click "Next" when the operating system restoration screen appears. Click "Repair Your Computer" and then select "Next."

Locate your eMachine's current operating system in the list of available operating systems, such as "Windows Vista." Click the appropriate choice and then choose "Next."

Select "Load Drivers" and wait for the drivers to finish installing. Select "System Restore" and then click "Next."

Scroll down through the list of available restore points. Select the first restore point if you want to completely revert the computer to factory settings. Select a later restore point if you just want to roll back any changes to your computer to an earlier date.

Click "Next" and then select "Finish." Click "Yes" and then choose "Restart" to restore the eMachines computer.

" no boot file name received ", Why did my desktop say this?

First test is put new harddrive in and when it goes to boot press Delete,
for entry to Setup, make sure new hard drive is found in equipment.
System equipment, if so then Put Operating disk in CD drive and check
check boot list , Put CD drive first then save and let boot up. It will automatically load the operating system back in the new hard drive.

As far as your saved material in old hard drive. You can check hard drive on second hard drive cable or with a USB adapter connection to
see if able to boot hard drive up and view files. If it works then you can
drag material from one window the desktop (To drag material just put mouse on file and left click-hold down button and move to desktop it will
automatically copy file to desktop.)

Emachine w3609 will not turn on green light is on the motherboard nothing works i did the power drain and still does not work could the ps be bad or the motherboard or both

Yes to both of your questions.
When nothing works, I first unhook everything from the motherboard except for the CPU, video, and memory. Then turn it on. If you get the fan starting up and video, then hook up the hard drive and keyboard and mouse to see if it works. Lastly, hook up the CD--this is the part that fails most often.

How do I factory restore an Emachine w3609?

Hi there.
If there is no option to press F11 as the computer starts then you are going to have to purchase a recovery disk for that machine or purchase a Windows installation disk to fully reset it to factory

After installing hard drive

You shouldn't have to run regedit for this.

I think you're saying it doesn't recognize the DVD player.

I assume you're running XP

First, go to Control Panel/Add New hardware to see if it's recognized. Let it discover new hardware and see if the drive gets recognized.

If not, go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and find the DVD player. Try to Update the drivers. If that doesn't help, select Uninstall, then reboot. Windows should then install the standard drivers, and you're good to go.
