The "sender's" fax machine is attempting to RECEIVE a fax. This happens because they don't have the document fully inserted into the scanner before dialing. (According to HP's error code listing for "comm error 242" - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=buu02549) This is not a problem of a bad connection. Bad line condition codes are 223, 224 and most of the codes starting with 23.

Maybe depends on poor phone connection from this sender, caused by bad line or a transmitt problems. In faxsettings All fax, change "error correction" to off and "V34" faxspeed to slow, this will help.

The fax machine needs to be reset. Simply shut off the machine, wait one minute, and turn on machine & fax. If turning off the machine does not clear your machine then you have to unplug the machine & follow the same procedures. Worked for me.
