You need active internet connection for this:
1. press #0000#, then it will display you the current software version that your phone is using.2. press option, then select check for updates.3. it will then go to connecting to internet, select yes.4. if there is available update, you will be provided instructions that the phone is updating software.5. you will be ask to replace the old version with the new version, just select YES.6. your phone will restart, that's part of the software update.7. after restarting, your phone will now be using the latest version available for your phone.8. you can again check the current version of the phone's software by entering *#0000#, then you are good to go.
You can also try to this:go to settings --> software update --> download available updates --> phone will restart --> you will be using the new version of the phone's software after this.

I bought Nokia 6300b RM-222 with firmware version 4.71, but now the latest firmware is 7.30 (or any latter build). But Nokia Software Updater (link) told me that I already had latest firmware and refused to update my phone. Below I described the steps to upgrade Nokia 6300b RM-222 from version 4.71 (or any other version) to version 7.21/7.30 (or any latter build).



1. You need download and install NSU - Nokia Software Updater (http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/download#) and run it to ensure that all is ok! (don't forget to switch on and connect Nokia 6300 via USB with PC)
2. You need to download and install NSS (Nemesis Service Suite) (http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page_2), the latest version of NSS was 1.0.38.15 (select "Virtual USB Device" mode)
3. Close NSU if it's not closed and load NSS then click icon "Scan for new device"
4. Click icon "Phone Info" and button "Scan" inside it
5. If all is ok you'll see some lines with Phone Version, Phone IMEI and so on
6. Click button "Read" and remember your "Product Code"
7. If your want to clean your phone go to tab "Tools" and switch to subtab "Factory Setting", choose option "Full Factory" then press button "Reset" (NOTE!!! all personal data and settings will be cleared!)

Many new phones seem to be having problems with the firmware needing to be updated because of the shelf life being so long. The phone may be new but the firmware/software could be a year old or older requiring a firmware update. If you have the cable, you may be able to find an update on nokia's website, otherwise the wireless carrier.

Be patient, you may have to do a restart or two on your mob afterwards. Even remove the battery to get it going again (not recommended). But give it plenty of time.
It is also wise not to use your PC while updating software, just in case the PC freezes.
If the PC freezes during an update, you’re up the creek without a paddle...

I did an update on a Sony Eric 810i it took nearly two hours.
More... Your phone turns itself on and off, sometimes more than once while updating software, you should leave it well alone during the update.

note: to update your phone must use usb connectivity cable CA-53 and High-speed internet connection. once updating your phone do not disconnect the cable it can damage your phone.
if you can't do it just go to your nearest service center to upgrade to higher version.

Dear Friends same problem here to me. i update my phone's software some days ago using nokia software updater after that i am having that problem. On old version this is working fine. But the new version sucks.
