A single key failure on a portable is almost always a mechanical failure of the keyboard itself. The good thing is keyboards are generally cheap and easy to replace.

Backspace and enter not working

If you recently installed this and the keys have never worked remove the keyboard and ensure that the ribbon cable is fully seated and that the lock is all the way engaged.

If it had worked and suddenly no longer works, you may have to replace the keyboard. You can purchase the keyboard from Amazon or many other online retailers. Instructions for replacing the keyboard can be found here.

Hope this was helpful

My backspace key does not work.my laptop is Dell Inspiron 640m. Thank you.

Your backspace does not work.... well could be many reasons, but if its the key itself, you can replace just the dell laptop key, if you spilled something then you will need a new keyboard, we really need more info. Good luck!

Some keys stop working on keyboard

The particular keyboardpart must have gone. I had his problem with my Dell some years back. I removed the entire laptop, removed and reinstalled teh keyboard wire to the motherboard..and the problem did not arise. Happens whenever over heating occurs.

Dell notebook keyboard malfunction

I suspect just as you suggested something was spilled on it. Other than loose keys laptop keyboards are generally not repairable. They are not that difficult to replace, but check the Service Manual before deciding to do it yourself.
