Driver file shuts down windows

Hi, I have an old computer: Dell Dimension XPS T500 that I have installed a PNY GeForce Fx 5200 graphics card as an upgrade to. This card uses NVIDIA technology and consequently uses NVIDIA graphics drivers. The problem I am having is that my computer crashes and when it does it says the problem stems from the file nv4_disp.dll which is a part of the NVIDIA driver. I have downloaded and installed an older driver and had the same problem. It seems my computer doesn't like the NVIDIA software as the same file (nv4_disp) has caused the crashing with different drivers installed...any ideas?

Here you have an auto detect applet. You need to have Java in order to work. this will identify your graphic card and lead you to driver download.

if not, you can manually download it from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

choose GeForce 5 Fx Series and your operating system.

after that, you will be presented with a page and download button for the driver suite.

run, install, next...next.. next until finish, then you are done.

You may be prompted to restart your PC to finish installation.

you need the correct driver for it which you can get from the geforce website. you also need to enter the setup (bios) and make sure it is starting with your video card (pci) instead of the onboard video.

My Dell latitud 3100, Can't see my new fx geforce 5200 256mb

Uninstall your previous graphics card drivers and install the ones for your 5200, if that doesn't work try getting the new drivers from the nVidia site or just smash it with a hammer!

Dell 8600 and video card

You need to open up your pc tower and insert it into an open slot. Do this with the computer turned off and UNPLUGGED. Once installed, turn you computer on, but still plug monitor into your old video card. Assuming you're using XP or Vista? It should detect your new card and install the drivers automatically. If not, you need to install on your own. Use the CD that came with the card, if you got one. Or you can download the driver here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/nvidia-geforce-fx-5200.html

Then turn off computer, plug monitor into new video card, then start computer.

New graphics card

Sounds like the new driver has mis-identified your desktop and/or monitor parameters, or possibly it is conflicting with remnants of an old graphics driver. I would go to Add/Remove in the Control Panel, and uninstall every graphics driver there, nVidia and/or ATI. Then open the Device Manager and uninstall the video driver and the monitor driver, then reboot, and insert the installation CD for this new graphics card, and reinstall. I hope that helps...

You will have to re-select your desired screen resolution.

Installing GeForce 5200 on Dell Dimension 2400

I suggest that better check that graphic card in another machine and make sure it is working.

Also find out the data transfer speed of your mother board through the AGP slot is compatible with your graphic card. (e.g. 4X, 8X, etc.)

If you are sure that your system really has an 8X AGP port (A choclate colored slot) then you could deffinitely install the card and work with it.

With the information I received the Dell Dimension 2400 deos not features an AGP 8X port, in that case it is not possible to install the card.

Then you should buy a new motherboard with AGP 8X Port to be able to install the Ge force FX 5200.
