Switched back and forth between SP and LP in playback

Hi - when I play my tapes, for some reason the camera is switching back and forth between SP and LP (over and over) which causes the playback to not work so well (lines, patchy audio, etc) Any idea how I can fix this problem??

same here, just got an old trv608 and get the same problem when I try to play old hi8 recordings on it. it will record new material and play it back fine, but the tapes with recordings (from a previous trv camcorder) don't playback, only display alternating blue screen and snow with speed changing from sp to lp every second or so

The control track on the tape is not being sensed properly, or there may be a fault in the capston circuit, or capston drive.

There are a number of issues that can cause this:

This can be a dirt film on the control track head, or the main video drum heads, or warn head surfaces. It may also be an alignment problem due to warn parts. The electronics that read and process the control track, or video synchronization processing may have a fault.

The first thing you can do as a user is to clean the tape path. It is safest and usualy works well to use a cleaning tape for your camera type. Follow the instructions for the cleaning tape. The cleaning tape has a surface on it that is supposed to clean the head surfaces without causing a disturbance. Usualy the time required is about 5 to 10 seconds, depending on the model of the camera and the type of tape format.

Read the instructions that comes with the cleaning tape. It is not recomended to re-wind and re-use this tape.

Past this point, the camera will have to be serviced.

How do you switch tape speeds to LP on a Sony Handy cam TRV 240

You can set tape speed SP or LP in record mode only and can not change it in playback mode.
To set tape speed, turn camcorder in camera mode and go to Menu and set SP or LP in record speed option.

Panasonic VHS VCR Playback mode Tape Stuttering between LP and SP

This is most because the control head may be dirty, this haed picks up the pulses from the tape to regulate the speed & tracking if this is off it can produce both the faults you describe. Also it is possible the pinch roller (black roller on the right hand side of the deck mechanism, sits just in front of the control head), this may be worn especially as the machine is five years old, this will cause the tape to guided off alignment.

Mode for playback of older 8mm tapes using Sony DCR-TRV730 ?

In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.

Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.

If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.

Hi8 Playback Problem

Clean the tape heads and see if that makes a difference.  If that doesn't work, it could be the tape motor is going out.  Thats typical behavior when that happens.

LP/SP mode

Seems your Canon doesn't support LP mode playback. Please see its user manual and check its specifications for LP mode playback.

Why wont it play LP taped tapes?

Tracking is very sensitive on hi-8 tapes in LP mode. This recorder will record and playback in LP mode. It is however recommended that if you record in LP mode that you use the same camera to play it back, that it was recorded with, or you might have problems.
Also from what I can find online, the TR427 is just an video8 camera not a Hi-8 so if you are trying to play Hi-8 tapes on it, it won't play right.

Setting the tape speed

Power up camera on Camera mode, go to menu, select camera settings, go to Record Mode and select SP or LP there. Now your camera is ready to record as per selection.
You can not change speed SP/LP during playback mode because its properties of signal set during recording.
