Not surprised at that, don't know much about these units but from what i was able to find out they don't use a usb cable to load software they use a serial cable, and computer do not have a detection process for the serial cable, You need the cable as well as the software to load information up to or down from the unit. Quick check brought this to my attention and maybe something in here will help you.

Hope this helps.

Does this come with a usb cable? Not sure how to hook up.

Not sure if it does, some may come with one, its the same USB cable that you hook up your camera with to a computer......

The USB to Mini-USB cable is to download maps and updates for your unit and transfer media to your Garmin

When you get your Garmin you need to register the unit with Garmin so the maps will unlock, this is how you would do it below....

With the Garmin unit off.... connect the mini-usb to gps then connect other USB end to computer

your computer will detect the connection

now go to www.MyGarmin.com the site will also detect what unit you have and let you unlock the map

here is where you register your unit and unlock maps

NO MAPS

Follow these steps to fix the “UNIT CURRENTLY CONTAINS NO MAP! INITIATING MAP” ERROR.
Step 1: Download the firmware update for your Sportrak model from:
Magellan GPS. Extract the zip file to your desktop.

Step 2: Download the base map file, NA_B101.IMG. This one is hard to find but you might look
on the following yahoo group page for the file: m330 : The Map 330 Club . Look in their FILES folder for the file called, NA_B101.zip. You may have to join this group to gain access to this folder. Download the file and extract it to your desktop.

Step 3: Now that you have the files necessary to fix your unit, follow these step exactly to upload the base map file.
  1. Turn off the unit and connect it to your computer using the Magellan serial cable. If your computer does not have a serial port you can buy a, SERIAL to USB adaptor.
  2. Now simultaneously press and hold that button the looks like the world and the button with the man on it (GOTO button). While holding these buttons, press and release the power button. Two zeros will appear in the middle of the screen like this, 00. Using the central joystick, change the zeros to the number, 98. The press the enter button once.
  3. Go to the folder where you extracted the firmware update you downloaded first and look for the Magup.exe file and double click it to launch the Thales Navigation Firmware Uploader. Click NO on the UPLOAD pop up window. Now Click on EXPERT from the menu bar. The EXPERT SETUP window appears. On the EXPERT SETUP window choose your GPS model. Then choose the com port your GPS is connected to. Now check the box next to the word ON under EXPERT UPLOAD. Then click OK.
  4. [i]Note: If you do not know what your serial com port is, here is a way to find out. Click on START, and then on CONTROL PANEL. In the CONTROL PANEL, scroll down and double click on SYSTEM. Then click on DEVICE MANAGER. In the DEVICE MANAGER, look for PORTS (COM & LPT) and click in the + symbol to the left to expand the category. You should see your serial listed here and the com port it is on will be listed to next to it.
  5. On the Menu bar click on UPLOAD. Click OK on the reminder pop up window. On the SELECT UPLOAD TYPE window check the box next to BASE MAP ONLY. The SELECT BASE MAP FILE window appears. In this window Navigate to the folder on your desktop where the, NA_B101.IMG file is located (you should have already extracted it here earlier if you are following all the steps.) Select the NA_B101.IMG file and click OPEN. The window closes and the UPLOAD FILE window appears. Click on the box next to UPLOAD and the upload process begins automatically. The process may take several minutes. Once it is done, restart your unit and you are on your way.
Since you now have downloaded the latest firmware and your unit is now functioning properly, you might as well update your firmware if it needs it. Follow the instruction found on the page where you downloaded the firmware update for your unit in step one.cool.gif

Webupdater won't detect Garmin unit

The below solution that I found on another site worked for me. Good luck!

Look at the programs you have running in the background. Some of those like printers or PDA interface software will hog the COM1/Serial port. I just looked at my task bar on the bottom right of the screen, and right click and turned off my printer software and a few other things. Then my GPS would link up properly and update with the Garmin Updater. I don't get why all the other forums have complicated explination that only help a small precentage. This solution will help over half of the problems.

How do I get my Garmin GPSMap 60Csx to work with C-map software

Try posting the problem listing your virtual port software or the laptop itself as the product, you may get many more experts taking a look. Other than that, one thing to try would be to set it up on a machine with a serial port, and if you can get it working see what all the settings are - it may give you some clues. I used to use C-map years ago, so probably now much different, but we often had unrecognised port problems that usually meant two or three restarts before it would pick up the port (this was without changing any settings). Maybe they cured this in the last few years, but the best answer I got back then for why it happened was bad software code in c-map, never bothered to try the later versions. Hope this helps a bit :)
