There is this problem with TomTom. Tom do not seem to overwrite the existing map file. So before trying to install the map, you need to delete the folder that contains the map. Once you have connected your TomTom to the computer, close the TomTom home window. Double click on my computer. You will see the TomTom hard drive as a drive (like you see the CD drive). Double click on that . Once the folders of the TomTom hard drive opens, look for a folder named USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P. (Please note: this name is for American continent. For others, this name will be different) Right click on it. click properties. Check whether the size of this folder is approximately around 1.3 GB to 1.5 GB. This is just to make sure we have the correct folder. After confirming this is the map folder, copy this folder to your computer for back up purpose. Once you have it safely in your computer, delete this folder from the TomTom hardrive. Go back to TomTom home software. Use the map guarantee to update/Upgrade the new map. You will see this time around the installation completes without a problem.

What do i need to do when i hook up my tom tom for the first time and try to download the map. i dont want mine to crash like some other ones did when they tried to download. im getting a tomtom 340s in...

It is a good thing that TomTom more or less functions like a computer. Start with downloading the TomTom home from TomTom website.
Then follow the link below.
http://us.support.tomtom.com/cgi-bin/tomtom_us.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7954&p_created=1194036534&p_sid=lhLt3NZj&prod_lvl1=&prod_lvl2=&cat_lvl1=&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTI2LDEyNiZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9bmV3IG1hcA**&p_li=&p_topview=1
Then comes the tricky part. If you are in US or Canada, you will see that the new map will not install properly. Reason? not enough space in your Tom Tom for 2 maps simultaneously.
Solution : Connect the GPS to computer via USB cable . copy every thing to a folder in your computer. Make a second copy as a precautionary method. Now go back to the GPS (drive) in the file manger. (delete the maps-USA-Canad-Mexico folder. This is an example, if you are from a different country find the map folder and delete it. ) You will see that you have freed approximately 1.6 GB space. Go back to TOMTOM home and use the latest map guarantee feature. This time around you will see that the map updates completes without failure.
Check it out by driving around through some roads you know.
Good luck

Need to no about updated my tom tom plus would like to no what free maps there are

1) You need to download and install TomTom Home on your PC/Laptop: see attached official TomTom link:
http://www.tomtom.com/services/service.php?id=16

2) You will then need to connect your GPS unit via the provided USB cable to your PC/Laptop withTomTom Home running and connected to the internet.

3) Your current MAP can then be updated via the 'Update' selection. Any other 'system' files will also be updated automatically using this function.

4) Using TomTom Home, you can also download free add-ons such as 'Voices' and 'Colors schemes'.

If you just bought the unit within 3 months, you can update to the latest Map free of charge using 'Latest Map Guarantee' function in TomTom Home otherwise, there are NO FREE ADDITIONAL FREE MAPS.

Hope it Help: let me know how you go!

Tom Tom only has Guam map since update

That is really strange!
I can only suggest that you verify what MAPs are physically on your TomTom device by connecting it to a PC/LAPTOP and use Windows Explorer to look at your GPS drive folders: should see a folder for each 'country' (like GUAM).
The normal way to check which maps are registred and loaded on your device is to use TomTom Home -> Update maps function: it will show you the status or whereabout of any Maps that you have loaded or backup and which one can be purchased.
Hope it helps: let me know how you go.
ps.i f you wisely backup your device on a regular basis (via TomTom Home or direct copy to your PC/LAPTOP), you could always RESTORE FROM BACKUP and start again.

I have a tom tom 930.

get the latest tomtom Home 2.5 application from www.tomtom.com and use this app. to install your new map. you may need to set up a registeration when you visit tomtom, but the map should go on to the device as long as you have room. put everything else i.e. phonebook, music, pictures on to the card.

Can't load Map update on TomTom XL 330S

You'll have to remove enough stuff to make room for the new map. I had the same problem which is how I found this site. Turns out, the new map is larger than the one that came on the unit. The 1 GB of available space is pretty much all used when you get the GPS. Just copy all the voices and POIs that you aren't planning on using to your computer in case you change your mind later (you can just download them again for free too). As for the voices, only one works for text-to-speech anyway and that would be Samantha though a male voice is available for download.

You'll need to clear just under 4 MB to make room for the new map, and that's if you haven't added anything. Having the drive/memory on this unit just larger than the map makes it very difficult to get much use out of TomTom's great add-ons.

My Tom Tom one 3rd edition wont stay turned on

I had this same problem and I did a reset on the device and then downloaded the newest version of the device software from TomTom. This brought the unit back. I still needed to download maps because mine came up with just Guam maps.
Hope this helps.

No maps found on tom tom one new edition

this problem just happened to me. i'd just bought my new tomtom one and tested it on the journey home. all was well and i was really impressed. that was until I got it home and went to update it to get the latest maps for my area. I installed all the software as instructed by the on screen prompts and downloaded the latest updates. i then went to turn the device on, and was greeted by a message stating ''no maps found!''

after almost two hours of complete frustration, i then tried probably the easiest solution anyone could think of:

First of all, connect the device to your computer and close down tom tom home. (making sure it isn't even open in the system tray).

Now, open my computer and find the device. it will be labelled as a storage device (mine was drive G). Open it up and find where the maps are saved to. Something like, UK and Ireland, or something similar relating the place you live. Once located, delete them manually.

Now, reopen tomtom home and go to tools. Click ''use latest map guarantee''. It will then download the maps again and install them onto the device.

Next disconnect using the option 'disconnect device'' from the device menu.

Finally turn on your tom tom if it doesn't automatically, and you should be back in business. This worked for me, after trying numerous way more complicated solutions I found in various forums.

Hope it works for you too!
xx
