DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Part 1541 on this diagram is your timer. It's under the front behind the kick panel. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=21463&diagram_id=646025#d646025

Amana refrigerator SQD23VW

If the freezer is not freezing. I am guessing that the refrigerator is not cold also. Here is link to an Amana Refrigerator Not Freezing. You will need to narrow down parts that are working and are not working. I would first pull the refrigerator out to make sure that the compressor and the condenser fan are running(the condencer fan motor runs to cool the compressor down). This is a link to a GE refrigerator condenser fan motor problem. The compressor and condenser fan motor are in the same place. This can give an idea at least where it is at. Make sure that the evaporator fan motor in the freezer is running also. Make sure that the rear freezer wall is not iced over. This can be a defrost problem. See what a defrost problem is HERE. If your unit is sitting there with the lights on but you hear no noise from any fan motor or your compressor. Your unit may be in a defrost mode. Locate your defrost timer. It looks as tho it is either located in the front behind the kick plate or in the back by the compressor. Here is a link to your units diagrams http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Amana-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-SQD23VW-P1315302WW/1268/0165000/P9060266/00011?componentDescription=&brandDescription=&searchTerm= or http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Amana-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-SQD23VWP1315302WW/1268/0165000?searchedModel=sqd23vw&blt=11 . I have an amana refrigerator model # ABD2233DES water dispenser keeps freezing up. Changed water filter laster about 3 weeks before freezing up again. pulled veggie draws out and hit lines with hair dryer...

Either the vents that are located on the lower right side are open too much or the temperature is too cold inside due to the thermostat not functioning properly.

THE WATER GETS FROZEN INTO THE PLASTIC TUBE ROLL WHICH SERVES LIKE A DEPOSIT TANK TO COOL THE WATER.

the fresh food side is too cold . if colder than 38 deg it can freeze water tubing . there are kits for amana and maytag and jen air to prevent this ( and what is in kit is rubber shelf blocker strips that install on the back edge to prvent change of air flow . they can be ordered from amana for your model .. and you might ck the tempt in fresh food side and adjust to 38 deg . this can help . also adjust the freezer to a higher # this will slow the cold air comming from the freezer side . hope this helps mm

The freezer is cold but not cold enough to make ice

Check the back (interior) lower half of the freezer wall. If you see a frost build up, you either have an issue with your defrost cicuit (timer, heater, thermostat) or the evaporator (freezer) fan is not running. If there is not a frost build up on the back wall you either have a sealed system (weak compressor, leak or restriction) problem....or the condensor fan motor is not working. This would cause the compressor to overheat and shut down until cooled, and prevent the deep freeze.

Help, no water but have ice out of door on amana side by side.

The freezer temperature dial is set too cold and it is causing the water to freeze in the tube right where it enters the freezer section. If you turn the temperature selector one or two numbers warmer for the freezer it will help.
You will also have to turn the box off and let the freezer thaw real good so that the line will thaw. Once this has been done, it should work fine.

Amana frig

1.Dirty condenser coils where heat is transfered to the room air. 2.Frost build-up on back wall of freezer section which would indicate a defrost system problem.
